I'm really starting to get disillusioned with the new defender thing. I've had mine for 2 years now from new. First off it came with non functioning Air Con and dodgy wiring (with a steering cover screw put through it), fixed under warranty, also replaced at the same time was the rear step, threshold plate and various hinge bolts and rivets due to corrosion. At the second service i pointed out the clunky gearbox, again this was replaced with the clutch under warranty. But, whist sorting this out the drivers wing was damaged with various dents and scratches. once again fixed without argument. My real issue comes down to what is and what is not covered by the corrosion warranty. It was sent away to the supposed "land rover approved body shop" who informed my local dealers that the bulkhead and associated corrosion around windscreen, Intercooler cover, the things that replaced the windscreen hinges, side steps, mirror arms etc.. were NOT covered under the corrosion warranty. But they will replace various bolts, rivets and the threshold plate (Again!!!)
The dealers said they are going to fight my corner, but do i believe them? What is my next course of action? I love the thing to bits, but i've had more bother with this than my old series 3 lightweight!!! Cheers Steve |

"it's a lifestyle choice" they said to me and I see what they mean, you'll spend all your time staying on top of the decay. "They're all hand built and unique" they said!
I agree with you that a new car ought to remain rust free for five years, even my Alfa was rust free at five years. Maybe a different mindset is needed with a Defender and maybe we should pursue the warranty claim first and then just get it done properly by your local motor factor and save a truck load of money on dealer servicing. |

biffabacon67,
Your "Land Rover approved body shop" is wrong. They are covered. If corrosion is present then the Dealership or Approved body shop have protocols to follow. They have to take photos of the corrosion, a photo of the vin plate and I gather a photo of the rear of the vehicle ( don't ask me why ) maybe to check the number plate hence date of registration and hence start of warranty. DO NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER. Get the photos taken and get your Dealer to contact L R. I have had corrosion around windscreen repaired, and am about to have front bumper and side step replaced. It is a lifestyle choice, but it has not been used off road, and never abused.
I'm not some careless farmer filling the back up with straw. I use it as my everyday vehicle and ay weekends it gets loaded up with kids, dog and mountain bikes. Planning on going camping in it, but thats it. If it were a discovery, evoque, sport or vogue. it would be no problem. But as it is viewed as a "Farmers Car" no-one seems to give a monkeys. just expect it and take it. But is it wrong to expect better, quality and customer service/support for £30,000 |

To keep the warranty going it's a good idea to keep the dealer servicing going (even though it's illegal not to address a warranty claim, whatever dealer you go to) but a dealer 'first service' is close to £500 and your local private mechanic closer to £200, that saving will pay for a chassis weatherproofing at your local coach builder and that'll stop rust for a few years for sure. So what do you get for your dealer service if you can get better elsewhere?
That's the basis of your argument, Evoque's and other Land Rovers have a shit load it of computer and electrical gadgets to worry about so a different case of warranty, the Defender is still pretty basic so you have a right to ask what you're getting for the money. |

I went for a look around one at a local dealer last weekend and am waiting for them to get a 3.2 in to test Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

I popped into Ames on the way through Thetford the other day, they've only got a 2.2 in there at present. Guy there said that there is quite a wait for the auto's and the Wildtrack models but they are expecting a bigger engined one for demo in late Sept early Oct. Steve.

Thanks Steve. I was looking into a 3.2 auto. Kings Lynn thought about 10 months wait. Will try and get a test drive at Ames when they have got theirs.

I also made a lifestyle choice and got rid of my 07 90 Hardtop due to problems and now well out of warranty leading to Big Bills, but have no faith in a Company thats first defence is "Well it is a Defender"
