Sounds like Darth Vader has climbed up my exhaust- sounds lovely though when driving:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJZpGLPO6DM&feature=plcp Not much to watch but I know many people have been asking what a puma sounds like with a modified exhaust- and when I was looking I couldn't really find anything anywhere. It is an Alive tuning full exhaust (turbo to tail) and the only modification to it is me chopping the center box out and welding a replacement pipe on. Hope this helps a few of you who are considering it..... oh, and it isn't noticeable at all with normal gentile driving. Glyn |

I think my mpg is going to be going down..... I am constantly smiling from 2,000-4,000rpm and then change gear rather than changing between 2,000 and 2,500.
Chris.... I had a funny feeling you might like it. I am now considering cutting the small rear box off too.
If throttle is: less than 50% there is no sound in the cab at all. 50-75% and you can hear it from 1-4th gear.... until wind noise is louder (about 50-60mph). 75-100% and it is quite loud. Normally when cruising at 70-80 I am on about 20-30% throttle so can't hear it at all. Glyn |

So no negatives to making it straight through? I was planning to do this to mine but my mechanic reckons its risky because of 'back pressure to the turbo' and recommended I leave at least the back box in line somewhere!
Put me off a bit so it would be interesting to hear how you are getting on! |

I have not experienced any negatives. I have not experienced any 'Booming' yet either.
Why do you want back pressure? A turbo works from pressure difference. If you have 20psi at the manifold and 10psi back pressure from the exhaust the result is 10psi pushing the compressor wheel around.... if you then reduce the exhaust back pressure to 2psi suddenly you have 18psi usable pressure....... which results in lower temperatures, which is a good thing, also means the engine works less. The more work your turbo does the higher the temperatures. VGTs aren't used in petrol cars due to them creating higher turbo temperatures which destroys the VG turbo. Also remember that the inlet air heats up as it passes through the turbo. The intercooler then brings the temperature back down to a more usable level. So if air is entering the intercooler at 80 degrees C and then leaves at 45 degrees C............ the same air through a cooler turbo will say enter at 75 degrees C and then exit at 35 degrees C. These are all just random figures to give an idea. The only way back pressure could be counter-productive on the Puma engine is if it some how went negative- which will never happen with so many kinks in the exhaust. Maybe ask him for more in-depth reasoning and let us all know. Glyn |

That does sound nice.... wonder how loud it is in the cab though?
FWIW, i had a straight through pipe on my 110 (Td5), with a rimmer bros "sports" V8 tail section that I had on my old hi-cap i ditched it a while back and put a standard system back on.... oooh for the quietness, it's deafening! much better than the booming that I had before. Performance didn't seem to be affected either, so I'll stick with quiet. Although, when I win the lotto, a Mercedes AMG 63 G wagon will sound just fine |

I will do. A lot of that makes sense but then I have it in mind that the engine management is programmed with these kind of parameters and I wonder if back pressure form the exhaust isnt one of them? Its not that I want back pressure, is it that the car is expecting a certain amount and if you take it out of acceptable parameters it might start error coding? I'm asking the question thats all. I dont really know! |
