My best guess would be the inner wings (inner wheel arches) rubbing on something?

Thanks Si, I'll have a nosey around there. Obviously something that goes quiet when lubricated by rain/spray from underneath, but it sure sounds like its in the cabin - but can't be! 90 XS

Some noise is transmitted, particularly through the bulkhead so it sounds like its coming from inside!
I once had a noise which sounded like the little bells Morris dancers have on their shoes when I was accelerating. I was sure it was inside - and went to the extent of removing the dash from the bulkhead looking for such a bell! About a year later, I crawled underneath (parked on a hill) and I heard the same noise as my shoulder brushed against the end of one front radius arm. It turned out that the washer on the end was loose when the bush was compressed. The rest of the time it was tight enough not to make a noise (and pass two MOT's). When the washer moved, it made a 'tinkling' noise! Tightened the nut a bit and the noise vanished! Someone should compose a database of defender noises and the diagnosis! Si |

It would be a lengthy tome! I'll keep hunting it down - like your noise it will be found eventually. 90 XS

I had a really annoying squeak, turned out to be a loose screw underneath the steering column fixing the shroud on - good luck
Also, check out the bonnet hinges and catch areas 2005 TD5 90 Hard Top Beer 'n Sex 'n Chips 'n Gravy |

Did you get to it in the drivers footwell, behind fuse/relay box? or did you have to remove instrument binacle? 90 XS

I had a very similar problem, nothing in the rain or when damp, really loud when dry and it sounded like it was coming from the dash area. It was worse on bumpy roads etc... A buddy of mine finally rolled the window down and held the hood while I was driving.... Like magic the noise stopped! It turned out I just needed to lubricate the hook and hinge that holds the hinge on. It took me like 4 fing months to stop that damn noise. Hope this helps you,

As above... 6 months it took me.. i stripped the dash out, window seals the lot..
Eventually found it the be the metal on metal for the hinge and hook on the bonnet.. annoying as hell but glad i found it. Quick squirt every few weeks, problem solved.. |

My steering wheel was originally rubbing on the plasting casing of the column surround and squeaking when the wheel was turned. Adjustment the casing sorted this.

been raining all morning, so of course no squeak! The bonnet hinges are suddenly becoming suspect #1 - as soon as it dries off I'm out there! 90 XS

Success, looks like it was the bonnet hinges!
After the earlier posts I sprayed a bit of WD on them and as today is the first dry morning went out for a test drive and hey presto - no squeaks! Amazing how sound travels and leads you down the wrong path, no doubt why you have to be quiet in a submarine!! Thanks to everyone for their inputs. 90 XS Volvo V70 |
