Not sure if this should be in the 'Expedition & Overland' section, but thought Id start a thread on all aspects of caravanning, seeing as there is no dedicated section for us 'tin tenters'!
Following on from my previous thread about towbar postions, Ive just returned from a nice but cold weekend in Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire in our newly acquired 2004 Swift Challenger 520SE. We went purely to test out the caravan. First off I pinched Lorrymans/Barrys' idea of fitting towing mirrors (whos thread can be found here ) Using a pair of Milenco Grand Aero Convex mirrors I followed Lorrymans advice and clamped them onto my mirrors, tightening them just enough to crack my mirror glass Click image to enlarge With this modification they fit perfectly.. Click image to enlarge After some adjustments and with the Defender mirror arms pushed fully out to the 90 degree position, I can now see the actual sides of my caravan (which I think is a legal requirement).. Click image to enlarge Some useful towing statistics can be found here With my 110 300tdi weighing around 2000KG and my caravan weighing around 1200 KG Im consideraby well under the recommended maximum 'tow vehicle to caravan ratio' of 85%, this figure can be vastly improved when considering the Defender can be loaded upto around 3050KG, and with a maximum towing limit of around 3500KG, im running at less than 50% (feel free to correct my figures). Anyway, heres my 300tdi with the new caravan.. i think this may have been said on here but if you mount the towing mirrors pn one edge of the landrover arm they fit a treat and no broken glass. i did a 600 mile + trip down to sunny cornwell 2011 with no probs.

Can't you just move your standard mirror arm to it's 'out' position? I thought that's why you can move them, or isn't it far enough to see around the 'rolling roadblock's' fat girth?

To be honest, Ive always towed that way GREENI, but legally you are supposed to be able to see the actual sides of your caravan, hence why ive decided to fit the Milenco mirrors. And as you say, I can now get a real good view of the queue behind me

I've swapped mine for the longer 'Wolf' mirror arms. That, plus tilting the head out, works fine. |

two weeks today we're off in ours to a lovely site in Cong, Co. Mayo (where the old John Wayne movie The Quiet Man was filmed). It will be the first time I've towed in the Defender and I can't wait !!

Well,
Similar to a caravan but easy to tow. Have almost all the ammenities that a caravan can have (Fridge, hot/cold water, shower, porta potti and a heater) Our maiden trip was more than 10,000 km with her. Looks like the perfect outfit Brian Mind you, your choice of campsite leaves a bit to be desired, looks all hardstanding to me Whens your first outing in it?
I live very close to that site but never knew it existed, and it certainly gets good reviews. If they take non C&CC members I might go there next month
Looks very spacious when errected Eduardo. And that second photo is very impressive  Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated Last edited by WarPig on 3rd Feb 2012 10:39am. Edited 3 times in total |
