Must have been smoking dope . 1st gear on a Puma is lower than on a Td5.
Guess this was the LR Experience guy who said something like that? You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

The first gear in my Puma tdci is lower than in the tdi. One of the complaints about the td5 when it came out was that first gear was relatively high and some people were inclined to stall it. The Puma tdci was fitted with a lower first gear to get around this and it is suited to taking off with a trailer with no bother at all. There was a thread on this site sometime ago about people avoiding first gear in the Puma and taking off in second.Try first gear low in the Puma, it is an experiece! I don't think the anti stall was fitted to compensate for the Puma tdci first gear. Some of the techno inclined blokes will come on to give you the full briefing on that. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Im led to believe the idle jack (anti stall) was fitted because low first is so low that it can be dangerous on decents, this is because without it the wheels dont rotate quickly enough to stop the car sliding. Personally I like the fact the car becomes almost unstoppable in low first DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

not sure on ratios of the 6 speed but a tdci has a higher ratio TB. 1st gear is to low IMO. with some larger tyres on it would be better and i use the 2nd gear no throttle take off alot more now on the flat or down hill. |

Idle jack and anti-stall are completely different functions for completely different purposes. Your description of the idle jack is correct, but that isn't anti-stall. You could lower a Puma's ratios by fitting a Td5 transfer gear set, but overall it would be way too low and probably dangerous on steep descents with poor adhesion. |

There is a lot to be said for driving downhill when its slippery as the wheels won't slide as easy then
I have only driven a puma defender a couple of times but it is lower geared than a tdi IMO And most of the farmers i know who have them use second to pull off unless towing Don't know about following sheep though may be they are lame |

does a higher gearing not give a lower speed?
1st gear in a puma is 33% slower than corresponding 1st gear on R380/LT77. 6th is 22% higher. if the end result is you want to go slower in a TDCI then fit a 1.4 or 1.6 Tbox or 4.11 diffs. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

i also think you are getting anti stall and idle jack mixed up.
idle jack comes in when you are in 1st low range to raise the revs to 1100rpm for the reasons as above wrt to descents and not having too much engine breaking. anti stall works in all the gears. its more beneficial and noticeable in the lower numbered gears.
