Tyres and balancing
I have a new set of BFGoodrich KM2's I need to have fitted to my 90 soon to the Boost alloys I currently have with regular grabbers on. Currently the Grabbers are balanced already so will the new tyres need to be fitted and balanced or just fitted? I'm assuming balancing will be needed with the new tyres too.

Yes, as the weight distribution on the new tyres will not be the same as the Grabbers.

It's the unevenness of the tyres that balance weights are primarily used to counteract, rather than the wheels.

Some tyre fitters assume Defender tyres are so big and the vehicles are so slow that they don't need balancing.

Last time I had mine re-balanced I was told not to bother with the back?

Having the fronts done definitively made a difference.

I had a puncture on a rear some years ago when working away from home with some 750/16's, got the puncture repaired and on the drive back to lodgings that night had a really bad vibration coming from the back. Took it back the next day and got the repaired wheel rebalanced, that cured it. I then bought some second hand 235/85 16's BF Goodrich, they were balanced allready, no hassle. At Peterborough I had some Insa Dakkars 265/75 16's fitted, all the wheel weights were taken off(went in their scrap bin not mine Rolling Eyes ) and I've not had any problems with not being balanced. Half the time they must be out of balance with the amount of crud on them, these have given me the least amount of issues than those that I have had balanced. I do keep a close eye on any feathering or uneven block wear(just another one of those things you become paranoid about Whistle )

I got some advice from a tyre fitter who said that stick- on weights are not really suitable for Defender wheels and tyres and that the clamp on ones although visible are much better. I've noticed that the factory wheels are all balanced with clamp on weights and my Paddocks sourced ones are stick on but seem OK

Stick-on ones are more normally used on alloys as a) they're not visible and b) they don't really touch the wheel, which could lead to bimetallic corrosion. However they do have a habit of falling off if the vehicle is driven through deep mud, so I've always used hammer-on balance weights. No corrosion on the alloys yet... Whistle

I have recently had a set of KM2s fitted and balanced, and if the of balance weight on some of the wheels is anything to go by, yes, they do need balanceing!

I now worry that some lowlife metal thief may nick my wheels for the scrap value!

Right I am nearly ready to have the Boosts removed and the Zu with Cooper STT's fitted.

For ease I was thinking of using these guys http://www.event-tyres.co.uk/about/

Has anyone had experience with them? Can you think of any pitfalls to using them?

It seems they have mobile balancing machines etc. Like the idea of removing the boost and rolling straight into my garage rather than lugging them around.

A good price on the STT's as well. Proud owner 110 Utility XS
