^ Its more remembering to do it....
I like the Thule one as its all complete, but then I have this and need to make it work with the Defender which so far I haven't... Only as I need the extension piece, another job to add to my list ![]() |

That's fantastic Jim_Bean, many thanks. I really like that set up and being able to swing the door open with bikes fitted. Think i might have to add the spare wheel carrier and bike carrier to my ever growing list!
Whilst the Thule tow ball type is nice as it doesn't load the back door and I appreciate they drop down to allow the door to be opened they still look like they get in the way. (Stacey007 I appreciate you already had it hence making it work). Still very tempted with a trailer for camping gear and bike rack on top, which would be ideal for weekends away but then having to tow a trailer just to carry bikes for a day out is a bit of a faff. Theres no real right answer. I was originally looking at the NAS rear step with a Disco 2 tow bar and a Thule tow bar rack. But this was way cheaper and quicker. Plus the rack itself is easy to just hand on the wall in the garage when I don't need it.

Sounds like you could almost hang the bikes on the rack in the garage too? Looks good.
![]() Out of interest I wonder if you considered this type? http://www.paddockspares.com/da4118-bike-r...ery-1.html I understand the Discovery one fits a Defender with a little tinkering (have to fit the spigot receiver upside down and drill one additional 8mm hole), seems possibly even easier to fit and remove? I think your right
Its what ever suits your needs as no real right rack / answer, If you had the swing away arm it makes scene like me I have the Thule rack so make sense to use it. Though I need the extender at £120 I'm pretty close to Delamere forest and while I can ride there from home and have a potter round the kids cannot. Now their bike are getting bigger and bigger they don't fit in the car with them so my Sankey will be used just to take the bikes there. only a few mins to hook the trailer up so its another option, need to sort my racks for this also as have them but need to change the aero bar fitting of my last car to the square type fitting. My other option ![]() ![]() Click image to enlarge |

I did consider the Paddocks solution (and the MAXXRAXX) but my bike has the cable routing underneath the top tube. The 'hanging' style carriers meant pushing the cable into the bike frame whilst being carried.
I also have a new YT bike on order and I wanted the best way to carry the bike without damaging or stressing it. Carrying the bikes by their wheels (whatever the solution) is, to my mind, the best way rather than 'hanging' them. Depends how precious you are about the bikes I guess ![]() |

That sounds fantastic! My nearest decent trails are Cannock Chase Trail Centre and all the hidden trails in the woods as well as a Hanchurch Woods. Both great fun, although Cannock gets very busy. |

That other thread is my carrier that I think you're talking about. I think Jim is right,
If you want to carry two bikes then this looks a better carrier than the one I have which you hang the bikes from. |

Do folks use these with the standard spare wheel holder on the door, a strengthened door or with a swing arm for the spare whee? I always thought the defender doors weren't up to taking so much weight but it seems and ideal way to carry a few bikes and still gain entry to through the back door.

I have the Mantec wheel carrier. I can stand on it when accessing the roof as well as having the bike(s) on the back.
Worked out well for me. This was mine yesterday - couple of years of use (twice a week to Cannock Chase trails) and still going strong. ![]() Click image to enlarge |

Thanks Jim.
I'm torn between the masai extra heavy duty: http://www.masai4x4.com/defender/spare-whe...-p50047130 The Mantec one https://www.lrisolutions.co.uk/swing-away-...0-110.html and a pricier option of the TMD tuning one https://tmdtuning.com/shop/tmd-spare-wheel-carrier/#reviews Going for the mantec or masai ones means drilling (which I've always wanted to avoid, but I just can't tell what weight the TMD one will take for the extra £200+ |
