Shhhh - do you think the others know? Incidentally, driving around the dust holes Italy, I noticed a lot of dust piling up at wheel arch height but hardly any on the roof - I would like to believe the RAI did something Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

I am sure it does help loads but if you are going to somewhere dusty I would defiantly recommend some form of pre-filter..... can cost as little as £30. Glyn |

Pre filters can cost very little. Raid the wife's/girl friend/your own drawer for a pair of tights/stockings. Double layer over the inlet and one pre filter for next to nothing. Also you can get pre filter socks which slip into the top of the snorkel. Then you can go for a full pre filter cleaner bowl. They do not always work if you have a roll cage/light bar etc so take care if you go down that route. Brendan |

May I add to the confusion about snorkle heads.
I go on a 3 month outback trip every 2 years (soon as this damn house sells will be going for 12 months) Typically the 3 month is about 20-25,000 klm about 3/4 of that on unsealed outback roads / tracks whatever you want to call them. We always go solo, never in a group, as hate eating other peoples dust. So the only dust we encounter is what we generate ourselves or from oncoming vehicles. In the case of road trains on dirt roads we always pull over as they are a mobile dust storm, I might be wrong but the way I see it is facing a ram head backwards is counterproductive, it is not only makes it harder for the engine to breathe, it also sucks in more dust. Basic Aerodynamics Click image to enlarge assume the tennisball is your snorkle head, When the snorkle is pointing forwards (to the left in picture) it sucks in all the air (including dust) that is in its path. When the snorkle head is pointing backwards (to the right) it sucks in the air which is also now also mixed with dust from the sides past the edge of the snorkle head , so its getting more dust when pointed backwards. That said Ive done some tests with my Nanocom plugged in & the Mass Air Flow readings are pretty much the same, on the same bit of road at the same speed with the Ram head forward, back or off all together. Ive found that absolutely the best RAI head for dusty outback work is the Donaldson style cyclone pre cleaner, enough dust gets in there to need emptying out once a week. But they do mike a fair sucking noise & gets annoying around town. Basically I have 3 snorkle heads that I use, The Safari Ram head pointed forwards for interstate highway work, I get about 120 klm extra per diesel fill ups on the 850 klm Melbourne - Sydney run. ( I have 170 litre fuel capacity) For general running about and doing construction site & bushwork I use a Toyota cyclonic pre cleaner, and for extended outback trips I use the Donaldson pre cleaner. I use the Toyota pre cleaner because its quieter than the Donaldson , I cant quantify how much dust spins out of it because it does not trap the dust in a bowl. The dust gets spun out the slots in the top. Toyota Pre-cleaner Click image to enlarge Donaldson pre cleaner Click image to enlarge Dust problem is so bad that i also installed one (Donaldson air cleaner & RAI with pre-cleaner) on my Caravan, Uses a marine bilge fan to pump clean air into the van, thus stopping any dust getting sucked in, which is a huge problem if you go vanning in the desert. This is where you have to remember that sand/dust particles are much heavier than air and therefore the area just behind the snorkel (Tennis ball) will contain way more air than dust as it weighs considerably less. The powder in the wind tunnels are even lighter than dust.
Turbo engines work off pressure- therefore unless there is a physical restriction (too small a diamiter tube or restrictive filter) the turbo will suck the required air from the atmosphere to provide the engine. So it won't matter what you do with the snorkel head (as I mentioned earlier about the irrelevance of the 'ram air' affect)
I have a Donaldson type (ARB) on mine permenently as I spend morte time off-road than on road. I empty it every couple of weeks in the summer. I know what you mean about the sucking/ whirling sound.... I just put up with it, lol It really does open your eyes to how much dust would make it down to the engine filter if you didn't have a pre-filter of any sort Glyn |

Anyone who has worked in farming at this time of year will know about the effectiveness of the pre-cleaner bowls. In dusty cultivating conditions you can be cleaning the bowls out on a hard working 6litre tractor engine 2/3 times a day sometimes more.

Just to sway this topic off line briefly but its that time of year again, insurance renewal!!
I got a reasonable renewal from my current insurerer but thought I would try Price comparison sites. A certain pachyderm named site quoted £300 fully comp whoopee! When I called them to confirm the insurance and mentioned any vehicle mods/extras when I got to the "Snorkel" they stopped me there and said they dont cover snorkels as I may off road the car !!!! Indeed my current company, named after a senior naval rating, are actually a sister company of the aforemantioned, they could therefor look at my existing policy and informed me that I should have been rejected by them too as there was no mention of a snorkel!! As for another rant, when I spoke to a company advertised in LRM as a specialist insurer, similar name to the county town of a Yorkshiremans nemesis, I was informed they did not cover vehicles with more than 8 seats !!!! So beware fitting a snorkel without discussing it with the weasels that take your money every year who may or may not cover you in the event you havnt specified every extra nut, bolt etc on your car. Rant over |

Um Hello , Its a Landrover, isnt it meant to go off road. Are they saying that Landrovers without snorkles dont go off road. So that implies they wont insure a new Landcruiser GX because it comes from the factory fitted with a snorkel and they should be ashamed of themselves, I've never seen a pachyderm without a snorkel |

I believe the theory behind the hiclone thing in the Td5 & Puma airbox is there to act as a centrifuge & spin the dust out & into the duckbill valve at the bottom.
they are also fitted into the ductwork of 80 and 100 series land cruisers before the air cleaners, big improvment in breathing by tossing them in the rubbish bin. If you have a remapped Td5 you can benifit from extra airflow by pulling that piece of junk out, and cutting back the tube extension into the airbox, nobody ever cleans the dust from the drain valve anyway so its a waste of space. better off to use a cyclonic precleaner on a raised air intake as far as turbulating the airflow, any turbulance is lost as soon as the air passers thru the filter. |

Looks fab |
