Eric, I've just bought a defender 2014 and brought it back to geneva and it's making this rattling noise under the gear shifter when accelerating in 6th, who is a good defender guru in or around town?

(Sorry I would have PM'd but this is my first post)

Mine surely not... Whistle I keep it spic and span Thumbs Up

But must admit, a few weeks ago in the Geneva countryside also saw a local SVX90 in a rather mediocre condition. Not really a working vehicle, just some very careless owner Big Cry

Luckily this is quite unusual for Geneva, most people here are taking very good care of their Defenders.

Wow, this thread's been dormant for more than ten years!

A rattle from the base of the gear lever is usually due to the damping weights on the base of the lever coming loose. If you carefully work the gaiter down the lever you can release the two clips holding the lever to its stub and the lever will pull off. The weights will be immediately apparent and can be glued firmly in place although the low surface energy of the lever plastic makes it hard to find an adhesive that bonds well.

There are several threads on this subject - rattles from the lever - on this well-known problem.

OK, thanks so much. That's clear I'll have a look, thank god it doesn't sound more serious.

Other q I have is, I seem to have a slightly bent sway bar (almost looks neatly bent it could be a feature, see attached). Thats never comes bent, right? IE that indicates some serious offloading? Or could it be braking under a heavy tow weight?

And, lastly there seems to be a loudish kind of rubbing/ shuddering sound coming from the rear wheels/ wheels arches or axel when I get over circa 60 to 120 kmph which is slightly louder or at least more noticeable when coasting ie off the throttle - tho I think its there when power is on too. I thought it sounded like tyre noise at first but then turned the radio off and had a proper listen - it really is too loud to be normal. I wondered if a bearing but I thought this would be more loud/ also noticable when slowing right down too(?). Perhaps something with the rear differential?

I think you refer to the panhard rod (the bar that keeps the axle from going side to side).

On post 2002 Defenders, there are 2 part numbers for the panhard rod. The right hand drive Defenders have a straight panhard, but the left hand drive Defenders have a cranked panhard to clear the differential pan.

There are many threads with noise differentials. Perhaps you can state what defender you have, if it is a 90 or 110/130 and YOM as there are 3 flavors of rear diffs. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

As Dinnu has said, your Panhard rod is normal for a LHD vehicle, cranked to clear the diff pan. Your photo is below for anyone reading the thread.

Cool. Thanks again. Good to know.

Rear wheel noise I took it to a garage and went for a quick drive with the mechanic, who reckons wheel bearings - said not uncommon for them to to only start being noticeable once one gets to circa 60kmph plus.

Wheel-bearings are at least a simple and relatively inexpensive thing to replace.

I've found the main thread on the gear lever rattle, you might find it worth a look:
