Whistle why don't you!!
Hi,

Ok I've got a 2008 Puma with 40k on it, I've just changed all the oils < really easy with a garden spray pump, thanks for the tip. Nw there is a faint whistle from the turbo, i used all land rover parts. It starts at about 1500 and goes to 2000. It sounds like a emergency vehicle a few hundred yards back. Bloody annoying!! I can't see I've changed anything, it definitely wasn't there before and doesn't sound like there is a mechanical brake down. I re checked the air filter and thats all sound and I've taken the heat shield of the turbo and there is nothing amiss, certainly no soot.

Any ideas or similar experiences would be good

Is it quite faint?

If so that is completely normal. I had the same before. Every time I put about half throttle on at low revs I would check my rear view mirror to see if something was approaching........ passengers also heard the sound.

If it is a screech noise, at those revs it could be the turbo to exhaust manifold gasket leaking. Mine did it twice then stopped after a de-cat.

whistling after service
In my experience, once after a service, the air filter box lid was not closed sufficiently well to create a seal - hence the noise (whistling) during acceleration.
It is a 'pain' to ensure the air filter box is sealed at the back - suggest double check this by removing the lid and replace again.

Slightly off topic, but if the airbox lid wasn't making a tight seal on a TD5 would that cause it to be sluggish on acceleration at times?

I used to have a Meriva VXR.. Only 1.6 turbo, but SCREAMED on full chat.. Admittedly it was 237BHP (141 MPH GPS'ed), and on serious overboost, but I kinda liked hearing it when surprising the chavs in their "not so hot" hatches! Twisted Evil

Only rarely hear my Puma whistle, and only when the windows are down! ... ,-------,
