dont know what the prices are your side of the lake but we had a similar decision to make 2 years ago
Went for a low mileage A class, in your range you'll even find the 1.9 avantgarde with automatic transmission. I prefer the option to go for top engines in second hand cars as these have to work less for the same mileage. It's not the newest car but you'll get all bells and whistles with it. (ABS/ESP, airbags, auto airco, electric sunroof, etc etc) Regarding service MB parts and service are cheap (believe it or not) (and with that type of mileage it will last forever, see service only once a year) The biggest surprises so far are - how it drives (easily cruising autobahn at 170 kmh, and outrunning a lot of the pack at the traffic lights), and road manners/comfort much better than other small cars - consumption below 8l/100km (not too bad for the short distances) - It's HUGE inside once the rear seats are folded or put into their most front position, while giving S class knee space for the rear passengers when in the back position. Psycho side effects are that the missus will get used to it fast and start wondering what all those other snails are doing on the road. And ... the reactions of people when you come somewhere as a woman with a small MB compared to another small car.(disgusting i know but it really is like that, eg she never had to fuel up herself at a filling station since having it, before with a skoda fabia they didn't even bother looking at her) |

I'm with Ford...Ka, Fiesta or Focus.
Picture this...needs an exhaused or brake pads. Into kwik-fit. On the shelf, cheapest they stock, fitted and on the road again in a jiffy. Fantastic cost of ownership. Think of most other cars. Go to kwik-fit. Initial mechanic response is a intake of breath. "hmm, this renault/lexus/kia has a funny system, it changed mid-way through the model year, i'll have to contact hq, it'll take a few days to come into stock, and it'll be 50% more expensive than the one for the Ford"... I'm sure Vauxhalls and Fords are a really smart buy Astras are made in Blighty too Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

I'd avoid early Freelanders like the plague. Not just for the obvious head gasket reasons on petrols, but there's also a viscous coupling and a reduction drive to break. Not to mention that they weigh twice as much as small hatchback and use twice as much fuel, handle worse, etc etc.
Unless you need 4WD I'd just get a hatch.... and have a Defender for when the weather turns sour |

Although having just looked at that Pistonheads ad, that interior is amazing.
Can you imagine ordering that at the dealer? "Yes please, I'd like it beige and cyan inside". |

Audi A2
Aluminium space frame, light as a feather, won't rust, buckets of room for adults front and back, comfortable up to 110+ mph, fantastic mpg and airbags everywhere. Had mine 8 years and I'm never getting rid of it (okay, so it's a Quattro version with 110 bhp but anyway). Can you get them for 3K? I'm getting another one for my daughter soon when she passes her test Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

£1000 of Ford Ka. You're handy with the spanners so should be able to keep it on the road easily. You can get 50,000-60,000 milers for that.

It takes an hour to do a one mile bus ride that's amazing. You said she would only drive two miles a day. In the real world I'd get a polo or fiesta cheap and reliable. Get a four door so there's room for the kids.
My wife likes to use the car as little as possible, I hate going on the bus I'd rather get a taxi when I want a drink. |

got the gf a ford fiesta zetec z tdci.
- only £30 to tax for 12months - 1.6 putting out 100bhp so its still decent to drive. - easy to get 65mpg, and if your putting your foot down the whole time you will still get 55mpg. |

We had a Kia Picanto as a company car in 2007. It was a great little car and had air con , abs , electric windows , cd player 4 doors and 5 seats plus a long warranty period. ( probably still valid now )
It only went because our business re-located and it was gutless on motorways but as a reliable well spec'd car it couldn't be faulted. £3000 buys a 09 plate on auto trader. |
