Are the symptoms recent or have they occured since you had your 'repap?' Wouldn't harm either way removing your EGR valve and cleaning it with brake cleaner if you've the time and inclination. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Trying to determine if it has been 'caused by the remap' itself. It really depends if you are 'mechanically minded' and have the manual dexterity to remove it.
I was experiencing something very similar to yourself a long time ago and it was my intention of cleaning it, however never really got round to it. In the end as I was still under warranty and my MIL light was permanently on I had it swapped out at the dealers. If you do remove it yourself it shouldn't take more that 30-40 minutes at most if you're able as mentioned.

If you can hear the EGR cleaning cycle on shut down unplug the EGR and see if the symptoms remain. Lots of black soot smoke is a sign of over fuelling so check that the EGR is not to blame first. If you can revert back to the old OEM fuel file do that as well to see if the remap is at fault. Next on the list of over fuelling faults would be to replace the MAF sensor. These are not expensive at about £35 from a main dealer or online.

When it is unplugged you will get the MIL and 2 DTC's will be logged in the EMS, P1402 and P1409. If you have no diagnostic tool to reset the dtc's and MIL? Once it is plugged back in the MIL will go off after 40 ignition cycles without failing the self test but the dtc's will remain logged in the EMS..
