having owned a 50th anniversary v8 with a JE 4.9 modded engine in it i can say that it is a very nice vehicle BUT i am glad that i was not the owner that paid for the conversion; as he lost £10k for 10k miles he used it on.
Personally i think you can have too much power on a defender. It was probably 7.5 sec 0-60 and a top speed of 120mph (approx 265bhp) and very nice in a straight line BUT i had more fun in my remapped td5 for £1k investment. my recommendation would be find a previously converted vehicle so when the novelty wears off you don't loose too much money; or just remap your puma. have a look on overfinch website, as they have a modded 90 for sale ![]() |

Thanks for the advise mate. Had a look at the overfinch one and to be honest i am really not keen on the front end of that at all (like more of the series looks), but the rest of the 90 is done nicely. Yeah i guess you may be right about finding one that has already been done... I'll possibly take your advice and get with a certain someone here and get it re-mapped, intercooler, and exhaust done before i go thinking about spending a serious ammount of cash that mrsscottish110 wouldn't like so much ![]() ![]() |

Agree with you about the exterior looks although the interior does look pretty nice. However, the price is just ludicrous. It's pretty obvious who the target market is ...
I have no experience of driving a Defender with a big V8 in it but my stage 3 Puma is a delight to drive and, importantly, still retains its essential character. |

Michael,
Just to peel the can of worms a little more open...... Have you thought about maybe just getting a toy?...... For the same price as a conversion you could get a good deal on a very capable Tomcat with spares pack or even spend a little more and get a Wildcat? Then you have the fun of the V8 in a vehicle that can handle it. Then keep the Puma to tow it to comps etc. Glyn ![]() ![]() |

I have to agree with Glyn really.
Have a look at the Tomcat page here for some inspiration on what's out there at the moment - Paul's a top bloke so give him a ring if you need some guidance. I know of an Ibex up for sale at the moment with a 2.9 V6 cossie lump in it (its on eBay now actually) that should be a lot of fun. If you do decide to swap the engine out in the Puma, dont stick with Rover V8's. Look farther afield, there's far more bang for your buck available out there (LSx series, Ford V8's etc) Ross The Scotia Winch Challenge |

Was also going to say for the money I'd buy a lovely classic and do some historic racing/rallying... Easy to get into. Strong rallying scene in your neck of the woods - great fun
