I recently had this issue which turned out to be a loose jubilee clip on the turbo boost hose. The noise has returned with a vengeance and the usual suspect turned out not to be at fault! So after inspecting both boost hoses clips and likely foul points I found that one of the boost hoses wall to be worn down due to the contact of the coolant hoses.
I removed the boost hose and bunged up an end then filled the hose with water. The water started seeping out of the rubbed area. Whether or not this is the cause of the squeal I am glad I found this before it blew completely. After refitting the hose I was going to order some silicone replacements but instead ordered these from Entreq as I thought the silicone hoses may suffer the same fate.
As the fan shroud was removed I checked the pulley belt for wear and damage and noticed that one of the pulley rollers was missing some paint. Also the bearing casing was rusty making me wonder if the belt was slipping over the roller due to its imminent failure that was causing this squeal?
As I was in the mood I used a boroscope to check the underside of the exhaust manifold for signs of soot/blackening indicating a leak. The turbo manifold got the same and both show no signs, still rust coloured. No bolts missing etc. Next was the inlet side from the airbox to the manifold and found no signs of anything amiss except for the one boost hose. By rights I should have removed the intercooler and checked for damage but as I am about to order a new intercooler I didn't fancy the hassle of removing/refitting it only to do it again next week.
