Sollner, if you need an answer give Nige a ring and have a chat with him. He's very approachable and knowledgeable.

Hi All

Just had Ashcroft ATB's fitted to my TD5. Had the front fitted, drove it for a week and then went back to get the rear done.

When driving at low speed now, or cruising to a stop (even in neutral), it sounds like the rear diff wants to eat itself! Is this normal for ATB's to do this?

Thanks Tom

Hi Blackwolf

Thanks for the reply. This is the sound the diff makes: https://youtube.com/shorts/ekOHKmD8CxI?feature=share

Excuse the video quality!

Something very wrong. Poss pinion bearing breaking up due to poor match or incorrect install. Happened on mine. Drive lost in 300 yards. Try to see if the propshaft will move up down at the pinion, it shouldn’t.

I’d investigate before it gets worse

Problem solved (I hope!!)...

After checking as suggested by the replies, I forwarded the video to my mechanic and he said to a look at the handbrake. I turned it back and set it to 4 clicks on the ratchet, and the the clunking sound has now gone..

So I am hoping that it was just this!

New on me that lol. So your handbrake is partially on? Maybe taking some backlash out of the driveline but it shouldn’t sound like that tbh, mine doesn’t either before or after it had ATBs fitted. Mine has all three.

This phenomenon with the handbrake is quite common on Pumas for reasons which are not especially clear, and has been mentioned many times on this forum. Pumas need to run with the handbrake slacker than any other Defender.

What is confusing in the OP's case is why it started happening only after the rear ATB install, but presumably whoever installed the diff also fiddled with the handbrake.

Good find, anyway, and a cheap fix! Thumbs Up

They gave the handbrake drum a turn with the no. 17 it would appear when they put the propshaft back on!

Also glad it was a quick fix!
