I've joined the club now! Got an Xcess 4x4 "UltraBuild" Ashcroft ATB (rear only), very happy so far! Dealing with Xcess4x4 was a delight, very speedy and very high quality work! Can't wait to try it out off road. Worth every penny imo

As for oil he highly recommended proper EP90 instead of 80w/90

chaps, since the ATB has been in my Puma, there has been a groaning noise that's become quite bad.

My indie and I eventually traced it to the rear diff: at specific rpm/speed, there is a loud, low-frequency groaning noise + vibration emanating from the rear of the car. It almost feels as if the seats have built-in massage function, especially when I hit 80-100kmh.

Has anyone else experienced this after fitting an Ashcroft, and if so, how did you fix this?

No vibration, well anymore than usual in my 110 but I have got a noise which sounds like transmission wind up i havmt been able to trace yet

Just got an update from the workshop: they fitted a new crownwheel + pinion and the problem is gone, plus one of the bearings was not sitting properly (not too sure about the exact terms).

the original diff was replaced by LR after about a year of ownership, so not sure if that was not done properly, and after 9 years it finally went over when the ATB was installed?

my indie says now that the droning noise from the diff is gone, there's a 'squeaky' noise that's appeared, and he thinks there's a bearing in the gearbox that needs inspecting Rolling Eyes --

gents, another update on this ongoing saga:

after the new crownwheel + pinion were fitted, the droning noise was still there, so the indie took out the ATB and fitted the original diff, and claimed the noise(s) were gone.

Picked up the landy just after lunch and noticed that between 0-60kmh, there is a high-pitched whine coming from the rear, similar to the jet whine you can hear when a plan is about to land. Above 60kmh, the whine disappear, and once I get up to 80kmh+, there is still a loud droning noise + vibration coming from the rear.

I'm now at a loss regarding this issue (and I'm pretty sure so is my indie), so any recommendations on how to tackle this issue will be much appreciated.

Did you setup the diff by the book? It can be tricky if you do not follow the instructions. Torques on side bearings are critical (20Nm) and as well pinion depth/height and backlash.

Visited Ashcroft's fitting centre yesterday and had my front ATB installed, first impressions are that on the main roads coming home there is next to no noticeable differences, except a very slightly improved inclination to return to centre under power and a slight pull to the left.

Will update when I get a chance to use it on a more slippy surface.

I now have 2 spare original low mileage un-abused single pin diff centres both in excellent condition if anyone wants one for a diff rebuild please PM me DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I have front, centre and rear ATB’s from Ashcroft fitted on my Puma. (I spend a lot of time driving on ice and snow and I Do notice a difference since they were fitted.

One slight issue (when on dry roads without snow etc.) is that the steering seems to pull to the left on UK roads, and to the right when in mainland Europe. I’m wondering if the front one is somehow reacting to the camber in the road?

Anyone else found this, or have any ideas about why this might be happening?

Hi Pete. Even with standard open diffs you get that pull to the left under braking on UK cambered roads. The ATB will accentuate this. How bad is it on a scale of "thats irritating to holy crap what the hell just happened"??

Thanks - very useful info.

I would rate it as mildly annoying. The thing is, it is constantly there, not just when I apply the brakes. After a while my poor old hands start to get tired of applying slight pressure to the steering wheel to keep the thing in a straight line.

I’ve checked tyre pressures and they’re fine.

Fitted a front and rear Ashcroft unit earlier this year on my 110 with 255 tyres. Yes, I noticed a the slight pull but hardly notable. I wonder if the ATB's highlight other issues like tired shocks and bushes. m

Took mine to work and back yesterday which is a few B roads and driving through Solihull to Tyseley, dry roads and sunny day

I was looking for differences so probably drove a bit more spiritedly.

When pulling out of junctions fast (defender fast) with some lock on the steering the self centre action is definitely more than it was before.

For some reason I also feel more confident in the corners, its like the car responds to steering input sooner its not a massive change but I feel its there.

Other than that I can feel no difference to how it felt pre install, certainly not tracking due to camber any more than normal, in fact I was expecting to feel more difference, I do however have a pull to the left when I let go of the wheel

Will update on the wet road/grass performance as soon as I'm out on a wet day, which is rare as mine tends to spend its life in the garage or out on Sunny sundays DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
