How much harm with not approved oil – transfer case
I am in a situation where I cannot get the correct oil but I have to do a bit of driving for a couple of days before I get the correct oil.

Background:
The seal was gone, changed the seal at home, now lack of oil in box – waiting to get the correct oil delivered. But need to on the road now. Can get the other oil around the corner.


I can get something with the following spec:
Huile pour transmission mécanique (Mechanical transmission oil)
Performances exceptionnelle (exceptional performance)
Larges plages de températures d'utilisation (Wide temperature ranges of Use)
Viscosité 75w90, API GL5

What can go wrong if I use this oil for a week or so?

Shouldn't be a problem if it's only for a week, obviously change to the correct spec as soon as possible. --

isn't it so the transfer case takes GL5 75w90 as standard?

The MT82 main gearbox takes GL4

as far as i know the GL5 is newer/higher standard and approved for hypoid gears while the GL4 is not.

See no harm in using GL5 where GL4 is the minimum standard, opposite can be a problem if hypoid gears are used (both being 75w90 of course)

correct me if i'm wrong please

Yes - that's correct. Gearbox is GL-4, but the transfer box is GL-5. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Apparently GL5 spec oil affects bronze parts in gearboxes but I'm sure a few days would be fine

TF needs GL-5. It can also use GL-4. Puma 110" SW
