Rear Diff leak. Actions to take from a distance??
Abt a month ago I had a full fluid change done, so including front and rear diffs, at my local LR dealers here in Geneva.

I made a 800KM trip to Belgium on thursday as I will have the car properly Dinitrolled there at a Volvo dealer near Antwerp where LR Antwerp send all Defender owners for Dinitrol protection. Those Volvo guys still take pride in doing full and thorough professional Dinitrol job, which here in Switzerland you can only dream of.

Now, when I arrived there the car went on the bridge so that we together could take a good look underneath. Rust not really an issue, apart from some small isolated local surface spots which will be taken care of by them.

But, I was surprised to see that the rear diff was having oil all over it, clearly fresh oil of after the fluid change, and there were oil stains all over the near underbody. While on the road I did not hear any changed noise, and did not notice anything weird at all. In the past the diff did not leak (nothing leaked), I would have noticed that.

So what to do here?
Just let those Volvo mechanics take a look if they can see where the leak comes from, and eventually do something about it if they find a clear source of the leak?
Or ask them to take it to a real Land Rover main dealer? (The Defender will remain at that Volvo dealer almost 2 weeks until I have to be in the area again, so the actual Dinitrolling will not be done first thing next week anyway)
Or, ask them to do nothing at all, just leave the diff un-Dinitrolled, drive the 800 to 1000 KM back to Geneva, and then take it to the local LR dealer here. Any risk with that?
I have the prolongation of the warranty bought from LR after the car turned 3 years, so possibly this leak would be covered, not sure.

Don't want to run the risk that the diff would get damaged, although not sure how much oil has been spilled.

I am back home now, so whatever I tell them to do or not will be from a distance.

Also if best thing is to let the Volvo mechanics where the car now is take a look, are there any suggestions/recommendations for them?

Firstly, you stated you have an extended warranty. Is this leak covered by the warranty? If it is covered then ask the insurers. What they would advise. If it is not covered then I would ask your Volvo dealers if they could arrange to have it sorted either by themselves or a local LR dealer. LANDYWATCH

Common leak I've had three new diff seals, easy enough fix, first thing take out the upper plug on the diff and see where the level is, top up if necessary. Then get the diff seal changed. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Thanks advise. I will first call my local LR dealer here abt the warranty cover.

Then if not covered, or if LR warranty allow, take it up with Volvo there and see if they can get in touch with LR Antwerp to get the right diff seal. I presume that the Volvo mechanics can replace such seal without a problem.

Hope that will all work, bit complicated as have to manage from 800KM away.

Question. Would it be this one, or is that not sure at all? Are there more seals at the rear diff that could leak, or just the one in below link?

Personally I would not be too worried about this.I've had this problem with a tdi and with a Puma. The leak always seems worse than it is as it takes very little fluid to make a mess. I used to be dipping the diff regularly while waiting to fix it and no matter how big the mess appeared to be on the outside there was always enough of the stuff inside to make topping up unnecessary.Sometimes everything would dry up on the outside of it's own accord and the leak would stop only to start again weeks or months later. Fair enough it would be better if it did'nt leak but they can and usually do. Unless you were doing phenomenally high milage or outback work in Australia I would not worry about it and get it seen to at the next service. You will probably make more of a mess by topping it up than it does by leaking!For peace of mind you can dip it regularly but I've yet to see one run very low between regular services. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
