Wiriing split charge relays (12s)
Quick question

I hae been installing as 12s socket on my TD5 today, is it OK to use the ignition feed from the cigarette lighter as the supply for activating the relay, the wiring diagram sugessted taking it from the alternator charge light.

However it was bad enough trying to get a wire into the central console!

All sugesstions welcomed.

The idea for taking a trigger off the charge ligt is that it will only energise when the alternator is charging, if you take a trigger off the ciggarette lighter then it will be energised as soon as you turn on the ignition and in theory you could be pulling from your starter battery. This would be of concern if you have pulled the auxillary battery down, a compromise could be to take a trigger off something that only works when the engine is not cranking i.e. wipers that way the trigger wire is inactive when starting but to be truly safe it's best to use the charge light as a trigger. Don't forget you could get to it off the back of the alternator(just don't ask me which one I'd need to check on a wiring diagram)

Any idea if this appears in the loom behind the switch console or dash?

That makes sencse jwl. I kind of got bogged Dow trying to feed my wire from the battery box where I have lead the 7 core and installed the relay.

My 110 has the heath Robinson ac unit cobled under the dash so getting to the wiper loom may be a bu**er

Whimsy I am at it do you have any idea how to remove the centre console for easier access. My dealer said remove the stereo, which I did, but in the bright sunshine I coul not see any fixings inside.

Finally do you know if there is an easy access to tthe reverse light switch on the gearbox as that again would be an easier to access option Big Cry rather. Than running a long wire back to the rear light box?

another option is to use a VSR (voltage sensitive relay) these switch on at about 14v and off when the voltage drop down again and can be fitted anywhere.

Which system are you intending on using?

Systems such as IBS and Blue Sea do not need a feed from the alternator etc. They also tend to have larger relays then the splice in wiring types of system.

Couldn't really say, I bought a kit from our local caravan/trailer outfit GT Towing near Potters Bar.

A heck of a lot cheaper than a LR part Very Happy they even changed the default 7 core from 1.5m to 4m for only a few quid and let me choose a suitable mounting plate for the DB ajustable hitch.
