jumpy/shuddering 1st gear
Hey, hope you can help me here. Firstly i drive a 06 td5 90. I am just back home from a great trip over from Ireland for the long weekend to the sailsbury plain which was fantastic. Since the trip 1st gear has been very strange sometimes on take off. I can feel a vibration up the clutch and gear stick but doesnt happen in any other gear even when taken off in 2nd from a rolling start. I was in low box a bit over the weekend and had diff lock on for short periods but was taken out of diff lock while still on mud. Just wondering is it a sign of the dual mass flywheel on the way out? or do you have any other ideas?

cheers

Geoff

I would not panic at the moment, if you were playing on the plain last weekend, I would think you have mud and mess in places you can't see. Give it a little time to self heal Thumbs Up

I would start with pumping some grease in the uj's

Cheers for the advice. I'll give it a good power wash underneath today and I'll grease everything I can see after work tomorrow worth a shot.

Mine has had the same issue for a couple of years now, and I assume it is related to the DMF. Not a big issue I guess until it actually goes wrong, but it does make pulling away smoothly difficult.

I'm waiting until the clutch finally gives up the ghost (probably not much longer) and will change the DMF at the same time.

Then again your problem might be something totally different - but it does sound similar!

Mine is very jittery when I first start driving it in the morning. It seems to sort itself out after about 30mins of driving.

It's been like it for a couple of years, very annoying... Current:D4 HSE

When it first started happening over the weekend one of the lads suggested that it might be a"wound up" diff, do you think that it could be this?

cheers

yeah it seems to alright. Just doesn't happen all the time i take off which is weird. Would it make a difference if it only happened when cold or only when warm?

When cold the various fluids, oils and components will be cold obviously and will be thicker and after warming up everything will heat up and become smoother and more fluid so to speak. I wouldn't worry if I was you as some times they have the odd thing happen but goes again. Mine like others often has the amber dash warning light come up and you tend to think what's wrong but in reality after a couple of trips it turns off by it's self and there was nothing wrong all the same. 1st gear is a little different from the rest mainly due to it being such a low gear so I always treat it with respect I do use it all the time but at low speeds. Often when pulling up pulling up in 2nd and only pulling off in 1st. depends on situation though.

Gave the defender a good power hose underneath yesterday and greased the ul's this morning so will see how that goes worth a shot anyways.

Cheers
