Sluggish bad performance seems to be the main symptom.
Have a read 
http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic10214.html Have a Google with TD5 Maf sensor, plenty of reading on other forums about it. it appears that if you disconnect the MAF and performance is better if could be faulty. Other thing I picked up is that genuine is the way to go but it is possible to fit a brand new MAF sensor and that can be faulty as well

Easiest way is to start the truck and move off immediately - try and get into 2nd gear quickly. If the MAF's dud there will be almost no power at all for 10 seconds or so, then a big jolt and it'll start working normally.

yer does seem sluggish
doesnt seem to want to go muich past 50-55 and would it also make fuel consumption poor

I would say fuel consumption would suffer, you would not be getting the correct mixture.

If it won't go above 50-55 I wouldn't think it'd be the MAF sensor.
Reason is, the ECU tries it to start with, but if it's getting duff readings it just reverts to a default set of values and carries on. This is why the car is sluggish but then there's a big jolt - that's the ECU realising the MAF is dead. The default values will allow the engine to run ok, but not perfectly. It's like that with a few things - errors will make the engine run worse, but as far as I know the only one which will cause the engine to stop is the crank position sensor. Everything else it can compensate for. Be worth plugging it in to a diagnostic machine before blowing £90 on a new MAF. |

Just disconnect it and see if there is a difference. If there is a big difference and much more power with it disconnected, then it's dead.

its more the sluggish bit it will go faster but does seem to take a long times getting there dont get me wrong on my old td5 90 it was tuned and went really well but wasnt as sluggish as this when it wasnt my puma standard goes better on 35s that the td5 disco steve 2015 2.2 tdci hardtop xs 3.2 conversion DONE 238bhp and 707nm torque and thats just the start ;-P hybrid turbo in build -done ready to fit ashcroft atb in transfer box 6 speed auto in build |

Use A quick Google search "testing maf sensor".
The autoshop101.com result may be of some use, third Page. Shows how to test with a multimeter. |
