Tyre pressure
Hi all

I just got a set of BGF All terrain T/A ko in 238/85 R16.

The tire shop installed them and has them all at 60psi when I picked them up. This seems a bit high, although the max psi says 80 on the sidewall, any insight is appreciated?

Thanks

I usually run 30 psi in the fronts (recommended in the manual)

36 psi unloaded or 40psi loaded in the rears (manual says 38psi unladen, and up to 65psi fully-laden).

Any more (than 38psi) and the ride quality becomes (in mine at least) too bouncy. Go too low, and your fuel consumption will suffer...

You may want less pressure for offroading. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Chalk Test
I run 32psi in the front and 40psi in the rear (takes into account the extra kit carried).

Tyre center did the same when my 265 BFG AT's went on but a friend told me about the chalk test...
See http://www.ehow.com/how_6948382_chalk-tires.html for a page describing it.

Ensures your tires are exactly correct for the equipment you carry Thumbs Up

Thanks guys. I guess the garage had no idea if I was towing of what my weight would be (of the rover that is....)

I will play around with the 38-40 range and see how that handles/rides.

Cheers

I run my BGF's
Front 1.9 bar
Rear 2.3 bar

On gravel/dirt roads I drop them by 0.4 bars.
On sand and most mountain trails (loose scree etc) we would drop them to 1 bar all round.
Apart from better traction, it will also cause less damage to the trails.

When overlanding I use the following rule:

1. Take the axle weight / 2 (two wheels) and divide by wheel carrying capacity (in my case 1550kg) and multiply by the tyre pressure at max load (BFG AT = 5.5)

Total vehicle weight: 2500kg
Front axle: 1150 (46%)
Rear axle: 1350 (54%)

Pressures
Front: (1150/2)*(5.5/1550) = 2.04 (round off to 2.1)
Rear: (1350/2)*(5.5/1550) = 2.40 (round off to 2.5)

3. When you get to gravel, measure actual tyre pressure (call it AP), deflate to half.
4. When you get back to tar, re-inflate to AP
5. For offroading on rocky trails, drop to 1.2-1.5 bar all round
6. For sandy trail, drop to 1.0-0.8 bar all round --

Just copied this from the Puma workshop manual

90 - 265/75 R16
1,9 bar 2,4 bar
28 lbf/in 35 lbf/in

90 - 7.50 R16
1,9 bar 2,6 bar
28 lbf/in 38 lbf/in

110 - 7.50 R16 (except Japan)
1,9 bar 3,3 bar
28 lbf/in 48 lbf/in

I had been running my front at 30 as directed by the handbook, just dropped them to 28 for a few days to see how it feels, also put the rears back to 36 which seems to feel right Confused BM52
