If its new I would be having the the box out for a look see, could have wiggled something loose when doing the clutch. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Hi Steve
Get the indy who fitted the clutch to fix the problem, as Lambert said, something has been disturbed when fitting the new clutch. Failing that, drop me a PM, I am sure I know somebody who will fix it for you - now where did I leave that sledge hammer ? I spoke to the garage who did the clutch replacement and they tell me it's a coincedince that the oil leak has just started. The owner said that there was no leak when they replaced the clutch, I just find it strange that I have a leak now. I have cleaned the area and put a tray under the drain hole to see just how much is leaking out.
if it continues to leak, I'll spend a w/e taking the box out and having a look ... |

Fortunately for an oil leak in that area, there are 3 different types of oil that can leak there, thus making a diagnosis a bit easier.
It'll either be engine oil (crank rear oil seal), would have made no difference changing the clutch. oil would be black (if it's been in for 500miles or more), and will smell "engine oily" (pull the dipstick and sniff that to get an idea) Gearbox ATF fluid, from the mainshaft of the gearbox. again clutch change shouldn't affect that as the shaft is in a partial sleeve, so can't be pulled to one side to damage the oil seal. This oil is red coloured. so easy to identify. Clutch slave cylinder. oil is thinner than the other two, and a golden-to-clear kind of colour. feels a bit like baby oil on your fingers, and has its own distinct smell (open the brake reservoir and sniff that). whilst changing the clutch they could have had the slave cylinder piston pop out, then someone stuffed it back in and damaged the seal. but trying to prove this would be impossible i'd have thought. and for the £30 or so for a pattern replacement (or about a fiver for a seal kit) wouldn't really be worth faffing about arguing. |

An easy way to tell if it's slave cylinder is to add water to the leaked oil. If it goes milky and washes away then its brake fluid from the slave cylinder Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |
