I just got a remap from BAS last week and can't believe the difference. It is a 2009 defender 90 and I had it a week before remapping it. I think the EGR valve was starting to stick because there was a flat spot about 2000RPM and my brother who's a mechanic said they've had no end of problems with EGR valves. So I got Pete from BAS to do the EGR delete at the same time which keeps the EGR valve closed and what a difference. No more flat spots and it pulls alot better throughout the rev range(less gear changes) with the remap.

Re-map
All

Seriously looking at a remap for my 5k 2011my dc, i tow a caravan regularly and performance and econonomy dont set the world on fire!
Couple of questions to anybody with one

1. Can you remove the map before dealer visit, and is there no way they could tell and invalidate your warranty?
2. How much difference to towing and economy does it make.

Any infromation from people with remaps would be appreciated, plus im looking at the ebay unit above, its seems to be the same that both forum sponsors use.Is the diffrence that the maps it comes with are preset and cant be tweaked or is there more to it that that?

There are different opinions here but most seem very happy. I have had mine since about 2008 (ish) and on two pumas. I do not see an improvement in MPG when using the tune. I have always taken it out every time I go for a dealer visit it has never been a problem apart from my last but one visit when i got a call from the service manager who asked me if I have a tune? I said no? He say “you sure”? I said NO! After the work had been done and I picked up the vehicle I was asked the question again. It was discussed here on the forum at the time as I panicked a little. Don’t know why or how but they were very suspicious but now it matters little as it has just run out of warranty.

Hi Dean,

With the Alientech Powergate unit (as used by ALIVE, BAS, and many other tuning companies), you have the facility to take a backup of your original map file, and for it to hold up to two tuned versions as well. Regardless of what branding is printed onto the Alientech box, they are all pretty much exactly the same, apart from the suppliers own unique encryption.

The real difference is in the tuning. It's pretty easy to make more power from most turbo diesels, for even a novice tuner. The experienced tuner will recognise more aspects of the mapping, and maybe get into the bones of it just a bit deeper. The specialist tuner (such as us!) will have a far greater knowledge of how that particular engine operates, and will have invested a lot of money in the software dis-assembly, and many thousands of hours in research and testing, to ensure everything is right. Tuning is all about making the engine run as efficiently as possible, so having a thorough understanding of how it all works, means we can get the best possible results.

Now onto your questions:
1. Can you remove the map before dealer visit, and is there no way they could tell and invalidate your warranty?
Changing the map file on the 2.4 Defender takes little more than just a few minutes, using our ATRIC device. It holds a backup of your original map file, which you should always apply to your car before any dealer visits. If you do not do this, and the dealers perform a software update, it may render the Alientech box useless. I would suggest you put your car back to original spec, several drive cycles before a dealer visit.

2. How much difference to towing and economy does it make.
I think this is best answered by the masses on here, although I will add that some of my customers do report an improvement in fuel economy, but I will never sell my tuning based on that. The main benefits of our tuning are in the much improved drivability throughout all rpms, which is a result of the smooth and refined increase in engine torque. Every remap I make is tailored to you and your car, so it will suit the way you drive, and where you drive it. This stuff matters!

I hope this has given you a little more food for thought, but please take advice from other long standing forum users, as they (usually!) know what they're talking about.

Best Regards,

Gary.

Dean, this topic causes me to go up into the loft and get my flak jacket, as it usually starts a Censored contest. Rolling Eyes So I have got some posts listed below on my experiences with remap files from Alive Tuning as I chose them in the end and I am 100% happy with the tune, the service received and the extra mile Gary has gone to allow me to do write ups on these remap files to show just how good they are. I tow a 1850kg twin axle and the only time you notice it is when you climb a hill and the engine tone changes as the torque is delivered. The Puma drives better with less gear changes and you get the EGR closed for free as well as it is included in the price. I could go on but I'll let you have a read of the below posts and hopefully this will give you enough info for you to decide whether or not to get a remap done. As I am an Alive customer that is the only remaps that I can comment on. Thumbs Up
