I have today got my 2008 90 back from the main dealers after its 12 month service. I asked them to replace the sump as per the technical service buletin. Guess what they refused! they told me that they had checked the tolerances and everthing was within its limits! And as the sump wasnt marked they wouldnt change it! What a load of B******s.
My front nearside shock absorber is leaking badly, guess what im booked to go back in 2 weeks time!!! Well a call to Land Rover Customer Service is on the cards tomorrow. Im really not happy. How have you managed to get the Dealers to change them? Edd 1999 90 TD5 County 1943 Ford GPW Jeep |

New sumps start to appear in April 2008 and as far as I remember during 2008 all of the old sumps were changed (at least here in Chile and also I heard the same from UK and AUS) Are you sure that you have the old one? If you have it, figth for the new one, as MK said it is far more expensive have a motor dead than change this little piece of metal. Cheers and good luck ! Thanks Chaps,
I have the old type sump my car was registered in April 2008 and is within the vin range, I tried 'would you rather replace the sump or the engine' but whilst the dealer said the sump he still refused to change it. I have driven Land Rovers all my driving career and finaly have managed to afford a new one, however I feel let down not by the product but by the LR backup. We will see what tomorrow brings, Thanks again. Edd 1999 90 TD5 County 1943 Ford GPW Jeep |

Then try to get your rig`s axles fully articulated to check the tolerance. In this way perhaps you`ll get scratches on the sump. Puma 110" SW

Thanks MK, I had already planned to bring it into our workshop tomorrow and do just this.
I work in Plant Hire, and I have been working on all things mechanical since I was a boy, but I am still amazed by the crap that these dealers fob you of with. I will keep you informed. Edd 1999 90 TD5 County 1943 Ford GPW Jeep |

Ignore the date on my picture, in that link More or less the full story here http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic222-15.html To be honest, the dealer did not want to know to begin with,, to the point of refusing to change it,, took a call to customer services, to get it sorted, and the service bloke at the dealer to eat his words !!!! This was 12-18 months ago mind !!! California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |

The sump on mine was replaced at 10K including new oil. So first service was at 30K and not 20K.
The dealer told me that they still replace the sumps under warranty but charge for the oil. |

Rang Customer Services today, they have opened a case and I have emailed pictures of my current sump. Things seem to be moving in the right direction!
I am away for a few days but I will update on here when I have the full story and a conclusion. I have at least one dealer in the UK who has told me they would replace the sump without question if I booked it in with them. Cheers Edd. 1999 90 TD5 County 1943 Ford GPW Jeep |
