Came across this today on a Porsche forum I frequent ...
There are also no "dibs", which are a load of crap online - you see the ad within a minute, claim dibs and then hang the seller out to dry for a week while you decide what to do. We're having none of that. Martin, with your agreement I wondered if we could add this to the rules ? |

In running the various forums over the years I've not seen (or had complaints about) too many people being mucked about like this, so I don't see it as problem on here that needs another rule - which would only end up being ignored
It's up to a seller whether or not they take any notice of "dibs", no problem with anyone stating "NO DIBS" on an advert or otherwise. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Hi Mal,
Quite often when an item is put up For sale on the forum someone will claim '1st dibs' This seems to mean that they want 'first refusal' ie they are interested but are not actually saying they'll buy it - this effectively stops the item from being sold until that person decides to go ahead (or not) I've suffered this as both a seller and a prospective buyer and I don't think it's fair. If I see something advertised and I want to buy it then I will say so and within the quickest time possible I'll pay for it. |

OK, I was typing whilst Martin replied.
If it is not to be made a rule then I'll ignore '1st dibs' if I want or am selling an item |

Can you not see my point about it being ignored anyway, so it becomes something else I have to enforce and for people to get wound up at me for doing.
I really think it is best to leave it up to individual sellers to apply their own policy. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

I do see your point Martin and I can see that policing it would be time consuming.
I must admit I didn't think that bit through. I just find it an incredibly annoying practice |

I agree Ken but if someone puts '1st dibs' on something you're selling it puts others off and even posting that it is still for sale further down the thread is often not read

Ahh, interesting you should say that Jamie, you're interpreting '1st dibs' as 'I'm going to buy it and I'll pay as quickly as possible', however, in my experience (and in the experience of the guy I quoted in my first post), '1st dibs' actually means that the guy wants '1st refusal' ....

Thanks for the explanation Matt. Quite often myself included if low on funds in Paypal and want something the quickest way to indicate your intention to buy is on the forum by a quote.
What would be acceptable terminology then? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Something that cannot be misinterpreted like 'I'll buy that'
