Wipers have really lost their get up and go, and only after 40k miles! They function fine but seems about 10-20% slower until they are warmed up. I know I live in Wales but really think the motors should last a little longer! Perhaps, someone has come across this?

Not come across this, try lubricating the wiper stubs and if you have the dash out, I would work some grease into all the fittings.
do they make a lot of noise - when cold or warmed up ? |

Aren't wiper motors a Lucas part? Surely the easiest engineering weakness on a Defender that could have been put right on the production journey from 2.5 n/a - 200Tdi - 300Tdi - Td5 - 2.4 Tdci - 2.2 Tdci.
Mind you, despite their inherent weakness, the Defender wipers are in my top ten favourite parts of our 110. Modern beefy single piece rubber tucked away wipers are all good and well. I just love the 12" weedy blades and simple brackets. It's rain. They wipe it away. A bit. Slowly. Or faster. Sometimes they stop where they want on the screen. I love it. In the same vain, my indicator cancelling thing, inside the steering column, has broken off for cancelling a left indication. It works on a right indicate. It's a bit annoying, but it's a quirk i'm growing to love! I drove the length of Brentwood High Street this morning indicating right. There are no streets off to the right, but it flashed anyway and i couldn't hear the click (which is barely audible anyway) because i had Keane on volume 16 on the OEM head unit. |

Wiper shafts are siezing up, spray liberally with WD40 every day for a week and watch the rust run out, soon sorts them back out, the other thing you will notice is they dont travel quite as far as they used to. I have had 2 sets under warrenty full dash out job every time. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Plaster it all with wax/sealant whatever is suitable
Err how do you get the wipers arms off, when you take the nut off it doesn't pull off |

Hmm I think mine are headed in the same direction. Depending on what mood they're in the make either a clicking noise, a high pitched squeal or a low pitched graunch. I'm sure if I had the guts to remove or part remove the dash a few sprays of lithium grease would do the trick
