Finally a bit of decent time and weather to start to fix the rainwater leaks on the TD5. I thought it best to be methodical, so started at the front.
The water would drip from under the dash after the car was parked in the rain. The front soundproofing which goes over the toe board was soaked on the drivers side only. I took off the heater control panel so I could see along the back of the dash, also loosened the lower dash and air con panel, and peeled back the soaked sound proofing as best as possible. I then closed the door and played the hose on the roof and drivers side of the screen for a good 10 minutes. When I had finished, I carefully opened the door expecting to see a flood, but it was not too bad. The main floor was still dry, and the door seal was working ok. There were some drips along the bottom of the dash and a careful look with a torch revealed the culprit to be the seal around the steering column, and the accelerator pedal fixing. There were a couple of drips visible when looking along the back of the vent panels through the gap where the heater controls sit. So, the accelerator pedal bracket is held by two bolts. There are 4 circular black plastic patches covering redundant holes from the days before TD5 drive-by-wire accelerator, one of them was not covering a hole properly. Easy fix, with some filler. The steering column seal looks more complicated. I have check tightened the bolts, but I think it will need a black silicone bead applying around the edges. Access is difficult, so it probably won't be neat! I will also bead around the pedal brackets whist I'm in there. I'm going to let it dry out properly before doing it. So, no leaks from the windscreen or false hinge brackets as expected, and no leak from the door seal. Next I will tackle the high level leaks which show as water collecting in the gutter channel that runs along the inside of the vehicle, and results in a cold shower from the headlining area above my right shoulder, or water running down the back of the rear trim panels. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

Yes, that's also on the 'to do' list. It looks like a roof rack has been fitted in the past that clamped onto the gutters. It would appear that it distorted the gutter slightly and cracked the sealant. There are quite a few cracks in it on mine. Ideally it should be dug out and replaced, but that looks like a nasty job involving paint. So I will also do my best to fill the cracks.
Also, I have noticed that on all the usual corners that are filled with dum dum, it has gone hard and turned to a crumbly powder. So I will be using some caravan mastic and tape to reseal all the corner areas. I see this been a Forth Bridge job, ie never ending 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

In my previous life, I was an engineer at BAe, and worked on some classic British aircraft.
Because I'm not overgrown, I used to be a fuel leak specialist. Classic British aircraft are very similar to classic British cars, in that they tend to leak rather a lot! I spent many an hour chasing fuel tank leaks on Nimrods, Bucanneers and VC10's, so a Land Rover with a leaky roof should be no hassle 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

Gareth - First, no way are you in Bramhall, I'm just down the road in alderley Edge
Second I've done some of a sealing job as well on mine. Started with alpine, side and read windows on mine. Seems to have worked a treat! The gutter channel leak I gave up on (as I couldn't find the entry point) but if you have any luck I would massively appreciate any tips. I also had the accelerator pedal leak exactly the same and some sealant blobs on the back of the pedal mount before replacing solved that Will Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg) |
