The starting demons descended on the Landy again.....
10min drive to the petrol station, fill up car started OK. 25mins drive to the horse riding centre. Left car for about 1hr came back to it, Crank Crank Crank.. No sign of starting. Stopped & waited 5 mins tried again. Click Click Click. Got underneath and checked the voltage at the starter solenoid wire 12.0v. Ran a positive jump lead from the main battery to the starter solenoid and it spun over, but no start. Ran an earth the starter/gearbox but no change. Jumped two batteries together no start and got click click, Got the wife to turn the key while I hit the starter with a wheel brace and the starter spun over. In the end got a tow start off a Isuzu Trooper... and the car started fine. Starter issue? Not sure if this is mentioned before...but a friend of mine needs to knock on the relays underneath the seat (in Norway on the passenger (right) side) sometimes to get the starter running. Atle CM

Last night I removed both the relays(Yellow and Black) from under the seat (drivers UK side) and gave them a clean. I have also tried replacing the yellow relay with a normal relay and no joy.

Went to the local Autoelectrics shop today and had a chat with them about the starting issues. Their suggestion was the starter solenoid. (despite me already replacing it) So I returned with a starter motor a little while later.
Got a phone call to say they have had a look at the starter motor and the windings that control the plunger are at fault. The windings are sparking causing the plunger to basically bounce up and down and not make a good contact, hence the car not starting because the engine is not spinning quick enough for the ECU to start the engine. Sounded like a sound theory to me. So this afternoon I sourced a new starter motor and then got home and in 25mins I had the new starter back in and the car starting. The starter sounds different to the old one and appears to start quicker....Time will tell. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Just make sure you fitted a OEM/Genuine Part Denso. Any other and you'll be back to square one in 12 months.

Are the non OEM/ Genuine Denso that bad?

The aftermarket units are usually not worth buying.
Like I said earlier, the cheaper ones can cause signal intererence on the crank sensor wire, so when cranking the vehicle won't start because the ECU isn't getting a timing signal from the flywheel. The one I got looks the same as that one including the two extended breathers. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Hi, I've been having the same problem for about 6 years! Keep changing the Battery but now this has stopped charging. Just changed the alternator but still not charging. Battery light is always off. charge from alternator is down at 11.70v when running. So, did changing the starter motor fix the random starting problem?
Looking at the wiring diagram the alternator connects to the battery via the starter motor. Could this be my problem - ideas anyone? Ex pat Landy owner in Normandy looking for hints and tips |

Since swapping the starter motor all has been good. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Check your fuses in the main box by the gearstick. There is a fuse (cant remember which one) that if it blows the alternator stops charging.... |
