Did it always make the noise in neutral or only when the vehicle was hot?

Cheers

Always - sometimes a lot worse than others - believe it was worst when warm. Changed it when it started slipping in 6th. Did 80.000 km on original clutch.

Actually it was pretty noisy when I bought it - at 45.000 km - but it did 35.000 km with noise. It went absolutely silent when it was changed.

The original cluch of my Td4 is noisy when the engine is very cold and the outside temperature is near zero C or below.

When I turn on the engine in neutral I can heard a fairly loud noise that disapper when the clutch pedal is depressed.
After some minutes of engine running, when the engine temperature slightly increase the noise fade away.
The colder the outside temperature, the louder the noise.

Except this noise I cannot feel any other problem, the clutch is working fine.

Is these the syntom of a soon-to-fail clutch ?

Mine was noisy all the time - and the last 5.000 km it was also pretty bad when engaging - making a metallic "Clang". Could be that it is just your release bearing that is "talking" a little bit. I woudnt worry before it sounds like a bag of nails all the time - except if it is still under warranty. My old 130 300 TDI rattled for 200.000 km.

Going in to Foley's on Thursday for a new clutch. I'm not going to put up with a disintegrating clutch 500 miles into France with the associated damage.
