Having sold my roof rack I now intend to buy a roof light bar and similar lights to the ones just solld- the lights are the easy bit, my problem is knowing what bar to buy. Like anyone else I can do a search on the net or eBay, but usually its hard to know why one that costs £50.00 looks about the same as one that costs £150.00!
I don't want to be suckered just because its being sold by some big company, but nor do I want to end up with a bit of rubbish that looks good in photos but is poorly made or hard to fit! So any informed advice most welcome |

Ta Rob, really appreciate that , and I like the idea of clamp fitting but the logo sure puts me off the first and the second one look odd due to the curve on end - would just look wrong against a straight defender roof. To be honest neither looks that substantial

Kez, I have been offered light bars for as little as £20.
Quality can vary a whole lot. On our red 110, we have a purpose built light bar with 4 lights and 2 aerials on. This is a double bar with brackets being 6mm plate welded between the two bars. Strong ( I can sit on bar without it bending ) Not a cheap option however! Cheap eBay ones need repainting within 6 months and lights bounce. Have you considered the Ali Rhino Rack bars from Oz? H section so you can mount as many lights as you like on top or below the bar. Available black or silver. Brendan |

No Kez I mean the 'H' section type roof bars as shown HERE
We normally stock them in black. We have 3 on the red 110 with the Foxwing attached to them and a demo rooftent on. If you are going to Peterborough you can have a good look at them so that you can make your own mind up. Also you will be able to see our light bar that we had custom built for our vehicle. If you like I will take some photos for you and post them up. Brendan |

Must be looking at wrong item as it says it uses a vehicle fixing system and looks like it clips into a car type roof fixing - will send you a email via your website, perhaps you could send me a pic of yours?

Yes why do manufactureres do that? There are quite a few bits and pieces I would have bought otherwise, For example I fancied some spiffy door sills from a supplier, but in the end decided against it because I drive a Landrover, not an Entreq. |

Hi Kez, some photos for you as promised.
The Australian Rhino Rack Bars are H section. Click image to enlarge OK have put this Lightforce light on for illustration purpose. Had to replace the normal 10mm bolt with an 8mm bolt so that I could use the electricans conduit type nut. Yes you can fix items on the underside of the bars as well Click image to enlarge No fixed number of lights or position with these bars My twin bar light bar Click image to enlarge Showing the way the two bars are fitted to both gutter and A post Click image to enlarge Showing how the lights/aerials are fitted between the two bars Click image to enlarge A good strong light bar HTH Brendan Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated |

Cheers Brendan, looks great, as luck with have it I think I have it sorted, local independent land rover guy has a bar he ordered in for a customer who never came back, so he's said I can have it at cost so going to see it later. Must admit I think the Australian system looks good, like the fact you can adapt it.

BM, consider seriously your needs, wants and budget. Not those of any salesman.
You can get a lightbar and lights from £50-60 up to several hundreds of £s One thing to consider is whether to wire any roof lights via the main beam switch or not. If wired through main beam switch they will be road legal assuming lights/bulbs are E marked Wired completely separate from normal light circuits they will be illegal for road use. However that has an advantage when/if anything goes wrong with the main light circuit i.e.main light stalk burns out in that you will still have working lights! Brendan |

Brendan, thanks for the advice, just been looking around.
i'm not going to add any roof lights. the bars will be used for carrying the occaisional wood planks, posts etc. the bars won't be on permanently. at the moment i am thinking from here: http://www.rhinoroofracks.com/land-rover/d...at_99.html but only if they can deliver by this weekend? otherwise i might just go to LR Dealer and see if they have any in stock and try and get a discount. looks like any local people will only 'special order' thule, so they are out BM52 |

I don't believe they will be legal - IIRC lights ocer a certain height behind the front axle are not road legal. That is why the Tombraiders were all supplied with the relay missing to stop the lights being used as supplied. They were wired to come on with the main beam via a seperate column switch.
