Battery powered tyre inflator
Hi, Anyone know of a good one that is quick and easy to use for 4x4 tyres. Don't want an on board one as i will use it on about 4 different vehicles.

I have a standard Ring one but it takes ages and ages....... Sad BM52

On board air compressors with a 9 litre tank is one of the fastest ways of inflating tyres but not the cheapest option.

Cheap inflators do just not work with 4 x 4 tyres.

Have used a Truckair?? Not worth the money.

Have both a Viair 400p available from Matt Savage here but currently use and prefer the ARB one available here

With electrical ones fit an Anderson connector. Also carry a spare 30 amp maxi fuse.

Also get an inflator with built in gauge Thumbs Up

Thats exactly what I have and its great. It comes with long wires and an extendible hose, so its really handy for pumping up trailer tyres etc.

Hi and thanks, i like the look of the ARB but probably best suited based in one vehicle.

I've been doing a bit of research and the TMax does look good. just need to make sure it will work from a cigarette lighter, especially as it will be used on 2 x LRs, 2 standard euro boxes and probably my son's LR as well.

cheers BM52

The ARB is readily portable between vehicles, yes we take it between our 3 LR's

Do not, repeat NOT use that Tmax compressor from a cigarette lighter! Reason being most 12 volt sockets are rated at 16 or 20 amps. That compressor like most compressors is rated at 30 amps.

Either use crocodile clips direct onto battery or use an Anderson connector, do not use a 12 volt socket.

I got a fairly cheap 'torq' one from B&Q (€ 17). Works really well. This is the first motor I've owned where standard foot pumps are not really practical as it just takes too long.

The B&Q cheapie raises tyre pressure in a std 235/85 tyre by 5 psi in less than a minute but I always use an accurate pressure gauge afterwards to check Thumbs Up

A happy medium is the Truckair.

I've got a Truckair that I've had for years and it serves its' purpose in that it'll run indefinitely without melting its' innards, but it's still pretty slow. If I were buying one today, I'd probably go for something like the T-Max one instead, as it has a greater cylinder capacity so it works faster.

The ARB one is a good unit too, but it's around four times the cost of the T-Max. Perhaps justifiable if you're doing a lot of driving that requires the tyres to be aired down and re-inflated repeatedly, but for occasional use then the T-Max or equivalent will do the job. Darren

What length of hose does the Tmax have? If I connected it to the anderson connectors on my seat box, would it reach to the tyres of a hitched up caravan?

Unlikely, I would think. I'd guess that would be 8 or 9 metres to the off-side wheel. Darren

I have the Viair 400p, its been mostly very good. Two problems I have encountered, first the bag has fallen to bit long ago. Second, the flex cracked where it exits the unit next to the switch, it shorted out and blew the fuse. Its caused by the repeated wrapping of the cable around the unit.

Mine has done numerous off road trips, including 2 x Morocco where it got a lot of use.

I had to replace the flex with something more flexible.
