Hi RRUK
Anyone else coming over from RRS forum ? VA will be along soon..... Nice looking Hard Top, wish I could keep mine looking so good. Never worth adding up what you spend on a hobby, I've kept all my receipts but never added them up. At least when the wife asks "how much have you spent" I can honestly say "I don't know, not much darling" What's planned next, spots, storage, diff guards ? 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top |

Landlord,
I think the next things I may look into are camping stuff, so perhaps one of those lovely Patriot/Hannibal style flat racks that can take a roof tent. The roof tents are SO expensive though, anything from £900 to over £2k for the pop up Autohome/ Maggi style ones. You could spend £3k on it all so easily, when even the best ground tent would only be a few hundred, allowing left over cash for glamping accessories! I won't be doing any camping over this winter, but maybe for festivals etc next spring and summer like Goodwood, Car Fest, Billing etc. 2016 D4 HSE 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF 1982 Series 3 SWB Petrol |

Finally a free day over a weekend and almost pleasant weather, but not ideal for what I wanted to do.
The final part of my preparation of the Defender TD5 is now done. (Cheers, claps and hoorays!) After doing all the chassis painting and waxoyling a few weeks back now, I wanted to do the chassis internals with the clear waxoyl spray. Although it was only about 14 degrees here today I warmed the waxoyl over a period of 90 minutes with constantly refreshed boiled water, and also thinned it down with some white spirits. Looking inside the tin it was pure liquid and very viscous. Ready to go.... It was NOT easy. The high pressure spray lance that Hammerite sell in Halfords is fine for the spraying of the black stuff, but the add on tube extension to get into the cavities is absolute cack. I had to take the first one back as it simply would not fit on the end of the spray lance gun, but even though it had all been warmed up, pipes and all, the wax would just set in the pipe. Its utter SH The fact you are relying on a squashed nail stuck in the end of the tube to fan the spray is pathetic. The head of the nail gets caught on the chassis holes as you pull it out so you could lose it very easily if you're not careful. There followed many times a blow through with the compressor to clear it and start again. In the main chassis rails it was easier to remove the tube and have the spray gun end exposed, and as it fire sideways at 180 degrees in opposite directions I used that, and twisted and turned it inside till wax poured out. I just about managed to get enough out of the silly tube to do the bulkhead pillars via the door hinge bolt holes and from the rubber bung in the footwells. I also managed to do the bottoms of the front doors but here I had a near disaster. I forgot to wear some goggles, and as I pulled the tube out it sprayed warm waxoyl all over my face. It's amazing how quick your body can react and I shut my eyes instantaneously, but some got in my left eye. I ran inside and just dowsed my face and washed it with as hot water as I could take, then used a whole bottle of eye drops to wash out the eye. What a stupid oversight. Please don't forget eye protection when working on any part of your Landy, it's not worth the risk. Crisis over, I went back and used up all the remaining waxoyl wherever I could get it in. It's SUCH a messy job though, luckily it cleans up very easily compared to the black spray on stuff. After that I used an aerosol can of Hammerite stone chip spray on exposed areas likely to get a pelting, front outriggers, footwells, back of the front bumper and rear crossmember areas. I like a belt and braces approach. I would say that 25% of the waxoyl is wasted though, as it drips out. Some top tips: 1. Find a better alternative to clear waxoyl and their poxy device, loads of threads on here about other makes. I only used this because I had bought it so long ago I couldn't take it back 2. Lay some old dust sheets under the chassis rails to catch the inevitable overspill, they can be binned and saves getting wax on your driveway 3. WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES 4. Do this on the hottest day of the year, it will make it easier 5. If you remove door hinge bolts, spray them with grease on refitment, could help in the future 6. WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES I didn't take any pics of this process as it was so messy I didn't want to make a mess of the camera of iPhone. Not much to see though and I know others on here have done some very comprehensive threads on it. I'm now pleased and thankful that the best part of 7 months of jobbing on the car has resulted in a Defender that is fully protected against the elements of a wet and horrible winter, muddy fields and farmyards. The interior is to die for compared to the way it arrived, and I never thought I'd have things like heated half leather seats, a 5 speaker stereo and subwoofer etc when I first started out. There is only one more thing I'd like to buy for it before the start of the shooting season and it will be useful and practical and that's a chequer plate T Box to go in the back so that I can securely transport my guns, and when it is called for, things like chainsaw, axes, wedges etc, and to keep stuff out of sight. These can be had for about £250 on eBay made to measure with twin locks, waterproof seals and gas struts. So, hope you have enjoyed my project and I shall keep you posted with any updates. Thanks for reading and any feedback welcomed. 2016 D4 HSE 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF 1982 Series 3 SWB Petrol Last edited by RRUK on 23rd Sep 2012 3:54pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Great write-up as always..!
I'm trying to find some time to do mine with the Dinitrol I bought. I have sprayed some inside the rear door and noticed it dripping out when the sun ( fortunately not often..!) shines on the rear and heats it up. Should be fun when I do the rest of the car. Cheers Simon |

Well done
I have used Dinitrol cavity wax on the inside of my TD5's chassis. Luckily the extension nozzles they supply do work. Must get round to doing the outside of the chassis etc before winter Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

Top quality gear simply cost more money to produce then poorer quality gear. Brendan edited by admin at OP's request |

Brendan,
You have overreacted somewhat. Saying that someone's products are very expensive is not insulting them. I never said the quality was inferior, just that they are a lot of money. If the Defender was my one and only car and daily drive I might feel differently towards buying such products. Everybody is entitled to an opinion and I certainly didn't insult Entreq, or your business. If I were to say that Ferrari's are Stupid money with a capital 'S' (S being for Stupid by the way) then that's not insulting Ferrari or their cars, just stating a fact. They are amazing cars, but they ARE expensive. That's all I am going to say on this matter. 2016 D4 HSE 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF 1982 Series 3 SWB Petrol |

Thanks Jack,
It's been great fun to work on and see the improvements, and I'm SO glad I did the heated seats now the weather is cooling down rapidly. The Defender gets its first day on the shoot in less than 2 wks now, the baptism of fire. Hope you enjoy doing yours as much as I have. You should start a thread like me! 2016 D4 HSE 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF 1982 Series 3 SWB Petrol |

Well yesterday saw the inaugural outing for the Defender on the shoot, replacing the Range Rover as my shooting brake.
Upon arrival in the farm, everyone was interested in it, we've NEVER had a Defender or Land Rover turn up, not since I had my Series 3 when I was 17. Lots of people wanted to talk about it and to non Land Roverphiles, the additions of the Predator wheels and STT tyres, tree sliders, roof lights etc all made a positive impression. Surprising how little space you have to play with when you're packing in all your gear, but it all went in ok in the end. The dog seems more nervous in it, probably because it bounces around a bit more than the RR. (OK, a LOT!) There wasn't any decent off roading to be done, just farm and field tracks, but still, was good fun and the heated seats were great first thing when it was 3 deg's. This is about the only picture I took of it all day! Click image to enlarge One minor problem, the damned Alpine head unit has gone faulty again. The front facia pop-off spring has failed again, so it's stuck on. Not sure whether I should just leave it or remove and take back to Halfords AGAIN! Not very impressed with the robustness, its not even being taken on and off every day, several times a day as it would in a daily driver. Rubbish quality. 2016 D4 HSE 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF 1982 Series 3 SWB Petrol |

I could have told you that, main reason why I don't care for their gear and would never have it. Take it back and swap it for a different brand like Kenwood Or at the very least Pioneer or something. With my Kenwood even though it's a DVD unit which you'd expect to be a little more fragileb but it has been off road and all sorts of rough stuff and not a single issue AT ALL in what I've had it now 5 - 6 years and been in three cars. Two Mitsu Colt's and now the 90. Trouble is with Alpine is they use cheap brittle plastic and components but one thing is they don't sell their stuff cheap though.. Not for me at all. Hope it's sorted easily. All I've ever had to do is a software / firmware update for iPod once that's about it. âï¸âï¸God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 âï¸âï¸ |

Well, the Halfords sourced Alpine head unit has been taken back and refunded as the fascia plate release spring broke again.
After looking around and from others comments I decided on a Kenwood unit, and found a place on eBay selling it at £59. So, I actually saved £20 It's not a flash unit, it has Aux in and a USB slot, but its not made for iPhone control, nor does it have bluetooth, but I don't need all that jazz in the Defender. I installed it today and WOW! It sounds SO much better than the Alpine unit did, it's got much more depth and really works the Alpine speakers well. There's loads more adjustment to it too, and a better display that tells you track and folder names on the USB stick. Great stuff. Also, it is a green backlight unit, so it matches in with the OE back lights in the car. There is one negative, and that is that Kenwood only supply a sunglasses style pouch for the fascia plate and not a hard case, which is a shame. Overall though, very pleased with the swapover. Going shooting in it tomorrow so get to test drive the stereo on the move. 2016 D4 HSE 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF 1982 Series 3 SWB Petrol |

You can buy a hard case for the fascia plates. Only about £6 or there abouts. I have one. Not sure if they are available any more though. âï¸âï¸God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 âï¸âï¸
