60,000 miles - a lot?
I've had a little browse on the forum and have seen some quite extreme opposites when it comes to reliability of Pumas and clutches and gearboxes.

I'm looking at a 57 plate 110 with just over 60,000 miles on the clock, is the general consensus that this is a lot or a reasonable amount of miles to have covered? Clutch and gearbox are originals still.

May I ask what 'average' would be for an 07 plate?

average is 10k a year, we do about 1k a month, although thats shared over 2 cars.

so 07 is 5 years old = 50k ish

It all depends on the price but I would personally want something with a lower mileage, if you do a low mileage no problem it will even out. Mechanically it's no real big deal, engines will go on for 200,000+. Plenty about to choose from with lower mileages as Defenders don't generally have high mileages, they are not your average long distance motor Thumbs Up More important with an 07 vehicle is to check all the recalls etc have been done.

12,000 miles a year used to be considered average so it sounds about right to me. John

Mine is October 2007, we have over 120k kms (roughly 75k miles) on it, and are still on the original everything (clutch, g-box, T-box, vacuum pump, etc...). Only had to replace the EGR and the common rail overpressure relief valve so far.

Lots of towing, and driving round at max weight..... not had a proper "breakdown" with the car yet!

Robbed this paragraph from the Car Insurance Information website....

4x4s (e.g. Honda HRV, Range Rover, etc) The average annual mileage for vehicles in the 4x4 segment up to three-years-old was 12,400 miles, rising to 13,600 miles for diesel examples.

IMO mileage to a slight degree is irrelevant.

I would worry about how it's clocked up those miles rather than what the figure is. Nick

I agree, better to have a good look around the rest of the truck. Body, underneath and make sure the xfer box/gearbox are still good. Brakes etc ...

5k off road is harder than 10k on road?

Has it been used to tow ?

Has it had an accident ?

I agree as well. but just because a vehicle has been used offroad does not make it less reliable, far from it. If the owner has kept up with maintenance I would choose a higher mileage vehicle over a low mileage one any day. Trouble is with defenders that many people think they can take them offroad all year then just sail through an MOT. I did a lot of green laning in mine and after every single trip without fail I put it on a ramp and checked it thoroughly.

It also slightly baffles me when people want to buy a used defender which "has never been offroad". It's what they're built for after all, and the answer to the question is "buy a new one then".
