I consider myself quite handy at most things but I am humble (and clever) enough to know I can always learn. So here's my question:
I just got some Safari security grilles for rear windows of the 110 (thanks again Leeds) and I'm about to brave the elements and fit them ![]() Normally I would just drill through the skin using the holes in the mounting brackets as a guide. However, the grilles are steel and I don't want to damage the powder coating inside the holes before I rivet them on i.e. bare steel + aluminium rivet = ![]() Any suggestions for a reliable way of marking/drilling the holes without damaging the grilles? Usually when I mark/drill, holes tend to be "a bit off" ![]() I'm sure there is probably an obvious/clever solution and this seems like a good place to ask ![]() Also, the mounting brackets have holes on one side (top/bottom) and slots on the other. Is there a particular reason? Cheers Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... masking tape the area so you don't scratch anything. line up the grills and with a pen mark the holes, remove the grill and drill, remove tape, inset rivnet and fit!

Never seem to get the marking right (God knows I try!) - do you just put a dot in the middle of the hole or draw round the rim)? I know it seems a daft question but if I cock up even a bit, I'll have a leaky skin... Tell someone you love them today because life is short. well it depends on the size of the hole to the size of the pen! either way the middles best. get someone else to hold it still |

Cheers.
Any idea why there are slots on one side and holes on the other? I thought it might be to allow for vertical error, although that would suggest drilling inaccuracy which could also make horizontal error ![]() But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

![]() At least if I drill really small pilots I can place the grills back on to see if I'm about to screw up really badly ![]() Cheers all Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

If you 'wet assembly' the rivnuts (by using Sikaflex or another suitable sealant) it will not matter if the paintwork is damaged. If the air can't get to it it won't corrode. With Sikaflex the excess can be cleaned off straight away using turps substitute or white spirit.

On the grandmother sucking eggs line, use masking tape to stop a drill wandering on a panel, if you centre pop a panel (as advised in LRO a while back) you will get ripples and circular dints in the panel - might get away with it around the window frame as the panel is narrow, but a sharp drill and tape is better....
