Turns out one of the wires had separated from a pin in the throttle assembly plug.
Found by chance and soldered to within an inch of its life...!

OK In have a 2005 TD5 90 and for at least a year I have been getting 25mpg Max.
Just had a trip to Cornwall and got a stonking 30 mpg. After driving another 129 miles am getting 30.9 mpg.

My thinking is that by joining 2 of the trailer cores at ECU pin 26 and 2 at ECU pin 14, that effectively is the 'Y' that you mention.
