When going from high to low I just put the main into neutral, take my foot off the clutch and then press the transfer lever forward. Smooth like butter.
For low to high I use the same procedure.

Like you I often have to jump start plant about the yard so I fitted an Anderson socket on the front bumper and made a 5m jump cables. Has saved me no end of time and was a really useful mod to do.

Should be located in one of the rear wheels arch.
If I remember well it is clipped to the rear pannel in the arch at the left side.
