It could be a "dead" spot on the commutator &/or sticking carbon brushes.

Sadly true - back in the 80's I had a mkII Transit with a 3ltr Capri V6/gearbox/rear axle combination - that surprised a few people.

I like it. It's a nice simple design that shouldn't date like some 'cutting edge' stuff does.
