If the noise goes with the clutch peddle in then I’d say you have an issue with the clutch plate. Was the clutch aligned correctly etc? 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

It’s the layshaft in the gearbox. They chatter quite regularly. Apply slight pressure to the gearstick towards a gear position and it should quieten as the slack is taken up. Just the build tolerances inside the gearbox’s.
You could try the swepco gearbox oil, supposed to help. Or some people have also had the idle speed slightly increased which stops the rattle also. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html Instagram - @r22oyp Roy |

What do you mean by "engage the clutch"? |

/\ probably means dis-engaging the clutch ( )
which is probably exactly what I would have said (and have said in the past) before reading one of your enlightening posts somewhere |

I believe LR90XS2011 on here had the increased idle speed solution applied. |

That is my suspicion, hence seeking clarity. It is surprising how something as simple as a clutch seems to baffle people! For the avoidance of doubt:
Clutch pedal down = clutch "out" = clutch disengaged = engine not connected to gearbox. The rattle is either the clutch plate self-destructing like genuine ones tend to do, or else is just mainshaft chatter resulting from stiffer springs in the driven plate. |

I also fitted an LOF Powerspec clutch a couple of years ago and the rattle started after about 6 months. I believe it is the gearbox main shaft chatter caused by the stiffer spring in the clutch plate and not the clutch itself. It's annoying but not a huge problem. Doesn't do it when the engine/transmission is cold, only when its warmed up.

It is normal. The center springs are stiffer than OEM so they absorb less the torsional vibration of the crankshaft. It is a trade off situation. Puma 110" SW

Ok good to hear. Sounds like same thing.
What I didn´t mentioned was the clonking/ratteling noise when I turn off the enginge while not pressing the cluchpedal. (sounds something is a bit losse) Do you have the same issue here too? I already drove more than 1000 km and it doesnt get worse. Its just so anoying that chattering noise and we want to go a few tousand km on holiday... |

I had exactly the same issue with the same clutch, came about as soon as LOF clutch fitted, explanation is that it is the springs in the clutch (the small ones) , not having the correct rate to manage the engine harmonics and basically rattling the transmission. LOF didn't accept that when I first complained and suggested it was my car but since others have the same issue have now apparently altered the centre springs!
Happens in Neutral with the foot off the clutch, as Caterham states I had my idle increased to 900rpm which made a good difference and now after about 20k miles the noise is pretty much gone. Must say other than the rattle the clutch has been good so far. Re the idle speed change I would not go back to 800 rpm, I still get good engine breaking but can pull away in second without touching the throttle and trundle along in slow traffic at idle with next to no hunting, well worth doing if you have a map. May I ask the "how to" increase idle? Puma 110" SW

The idle speed is set in the software of the ECU, I watched the Tuner IRB adjust it on his lap top, he also made it so with the clutch pressed the engine wont do more than 2000rpm, basically stopping you accidently or deliberately releasing the clutch at high revs and destroying something.
