In your situation I would be looking at a car port as mentioned earlier. Could be done DIY or a nice green oak structure with shingle or slate roof if you are looking for aesthetics. It will essentially keep the worst of the weather and leaves off the vehicle, but not all of it. The other thing to think about at this stage is perhaps additional security such as lift up posts and security cameras as she will now be seen more easily.

I built a really nice wood-framed, pitched felt-roofed carport onto the side of my house when it became apparent my Defender was too high for the garage opening. I drew some plans out with my father-in-law acting as advisor/sense-checker, neither of us are more than keen DIYers really. Ordered all the timber delivered from a local merchant and cracked on with it. I really enjoyed building it and it's lasted well and keeps 99% of the weather off. Crucially, if anything does get damp under there the open nature of a car port means it dries very quickly. I've put some LED baton lights in too which means I can work under the their even at night. If you have nosey neighbours, you need to check the Planning Portal to make sure you stay within permitted development rules, or get planning permission if you are going big. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Definitely check with your local Planning Dept. I found out the hard way that planning is a "black art". Ignore what the chap in the pub tells you. Find out from your local council if it is permitted development or whether you need planning permission. If converting your garage to residential accommodation - again you may need planning permission for change of use. Defender 90XS SW
