After post-poning the restoration of the roof, I finally decided to tackle that task last week end.
I started by removing the alpine window seals that were totally cracked and shot. How they were not leaking remains a mystery. After watching a couple of YouTube videos, I armed myself with the right tools and WD40 and managed to change them both in 45min. Very happy with that. I then moved to sanding the roof in preparation for a respray. Arming myself with an orbital sander, I went through a sequence of different grits: 120,240,320, 400 and 800. I then applied a quick coat of primer where the underlying remaining paint was too thin and proceeded to applying a cost of Chawton white enamel paint from The Paintman. Although I am far from being a pro with a paint gun, I had taken a stab at it when I tried to repaint one of my series 2 last year and I was quite pleased with the result. That’s the reason I decided to do the defender myself. Obviously not as nice as a pro job, but the whole thing cost me £150 all in including the seals. The overall result looks very smart, and the thought of having a water proof roof gives me peace of mind. |

I was originally planning to do exactly that, but I am going to wait until my tyres need replacing and make a call then. I am growing more and more fond of those wheels … the heritage had the same.
