yes, from our FAQ's :
My Defender MT82 6 speed gearbox is stuck in 1st gear, this is common on these boxes and is just caused by the selector rail jumping into gear when the vehicle is jolted for any reason, once in gear, the shift interlock plate wont allow it to be pulled out.the gearbox consists of 3 casings, the front main casing is about 18 inches long and the rear 2 are about 7 inches long, look at the middle casing, top face, towards the rear, on the left side as you sit in the car, look for a vertical approx 10mm diameter detent plug, the earlier silver ones had a mushroom shaped head, the later black ones are flush fitted. Remove this plug, if the later one, drill a hole and use a big self tapping screw and slide hammer.Once out, you can now use a small screw driver to slide the selector rail one notch towards the front of the vehicle, this should put it back into neutral, the later detents can be fitted in place of the early ones and have a stronger spring to reduce the liklyhood of this problem occuring Note the part number for the later type detent kit is LR017294. Just a quick message to publicly thank Dave Ashcroft for the assistance given when my MT82 gearbox had the "dreaded detent of death" issue..
Advice given, part ordered, gearbox now working.. The fix trakes about 20 mins, but all the faff taking trim, carpets etc out is what takes the time.. Remove the trim etc... Drill the duff detent (it's the vertical one, under the selector bracket) to M5, tap to M6, pop a M6 screw in the hole and use a claw happer to gently prise it out.. No violence needed, no slide hammer, no dynamite!! Then align the shaft, tap in the new detent, refit all the ancilliary bits, and viola, Bob's your Aunties live in lover..!!! Is this the same for a puma locked in 2nd gear?
Selecting first was hard, difficult change to 2nd and now stuck in 2nd. Vehicle not jolted. Last time one went the vehicle jolted and it was stuck in 1st. It's seems yes, answering my own question. Same vertical indent. I have done it once already too! Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop Last edited by jst on 1st Mar 2024 4:23pm. My wife keeps singing this from Coldplay "Fix You" which is quite appropriate I suppose
So my Puma is stuck in reverse. I followed the thread for the half hour job that took about 4 hours. Having been through it I would say that it is a half hour job if you've done it before. It took ages to get the transmission tunnel screws out and then actually extracting the tunnel was hard because I'm always wary of damaging another part that wasn't mentioned Then struggled with the high low lever because the instructions say to leave the linkage in place, you can't remove the lever with the linkage in place. I have now taken the vertical detent out but it seemed ok and I'm now at the "just wiggle the shaft with a screwdriver while rocking he NSF wheel stage" My wife isn't laughing now This is the important bit It says to move the shaft forwards but is that the same if I'm in reverse? I've wiggled the shaft and it's moving but still stuck in reverse, do you think I have a bigger problem? The springs turned up from Ashcroft today. I thought I only need one but four small springs have turned up plus one really large part in a Ford box. I guess this is a full set for a gearbox overhaul Any help from the forum would be appreciated |

As I recall the high/low linkage has to be moved aside but doesn't have to be removed from the box or vehicle.
The instructions in this thread (and others) cover the "normal" problem which is the box stuck in first gear. A box stuck in reverse is likely to be a slightly different problem since the reverse selector shaft is a different shaft to the first/second shaft described above. Unfortunately I am unable to find a picture showing which detent is the one for the reverse selector shaft, but you may want to consider looking at this youtube channel run by a forum member who has stripped and rebuilt his MT82, you may find something that helps. |
