Limp mode
2nd post of the day… driving home from work after doing about 70 I pulled of a roundabout and defender went into limp mode. Pulled over, turned off and restarted - all was normal. Came home cleaned the MAP sensor as it was slightly pitted, took it for a spin down the dual carriageway and it limped again until restarted.

Also had code reader plugged in, it’s showing no faults.

I had exact same problem. Got slowly worse over a period of time. In the end I could cruise at 2250 rpm but any higher and went into limp mode. Turn on / off and reset all OK. Occasionally got the MAF sensor air flow code fault.

The actuator on the turbo replaced seems to have solved it. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324809221948

I’ve been out and removed the linkage and it all moved freely. Is there anything to check that will confirm it is the actuator?

Which engine , 2.4 or 2.2. ?

When you say it went into limp mode, did the amber check engine light come up ?

If a 2.4 and no amber check engine light came up on dash and no diagnostic trouble codes recorded then it’s likely to be VCV.

It’s 2.4 and no lights came on.

Should I try VCV before actuator?

I had this problem for a while. Occasionally losing power but would always be ok when switched off and back on. Once when it went into limp mode I pulled over and got the wife to rev the engine while I watched the actuator. This confirmed that it wasn’t moving. I ordered a new one off ebay and it was easy to fit. No problems since.

I would expect a turbo actuator issue to raise some DTC’s . However do the test roverrobbie highlights above and if actuator is moving then the VCV will be the prime suspect.

Note the VCV is made by Denso, but there are so many fakes out there it’s worth ensuring you get a gen part from a reputable supplier, ie bell auto services, https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic85644.html?highlight=vcv

BAS https://bellautoservices.co.uk/store/defen...our-valve/ not the cheapest but with Pete you know it’s a gen part, and given the time to fit first time you will be glad you don’t need to do again.

Ps- to be precise, limp mode is a specific issue, whereby a range of DTC’s , generally associated with emissions, will trigger an amber check engine light on the instrument cluster and put your engine in a mode that will limit revs, aka limp mode . What you are experiencing is not a limp mode, but a reduction in the engine performance in certain circumstances.

where that

I already had an amber light up so can’t tell if the actuator was giving an amber warning.
The engine would rev ok but had little power suggesting that it wasn’t limp mode . The actuator was stuck fully up . I read somewhere that this is overboost which causes a lack of power. The new actuator seemed to have slightly less travel than the faulty one so the old one might have been physically sticking or had gone beyond the range of its position feedback, not sure.

To begin with no but after a while, there was a slight loss of power, it felt a bit sluggish from the restricted boost.
