Hi,
In theory any garage can service your Defender without voiding the warranty as long as there strictly follow the official service schedule - it would appear that some independants may do a better job than a main dealer As long as you feel certain they understand Pumas and have all the knowledge and diagnostic equipment they need for any ECU upgrades then go for it. From a service record viewpoint as long as they were a recognised LR independant then most people would be ok - my main worry would be warranty work as most independants aren't going to touch that without payment and a main dealer may try and say the independant didn't spot something they should have. You would also need to get a 12 month anti corrosion check done and the book stamped. John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

Thanks very much for coming back to me, really appreciated. If you don't mind me running my conversation with them past you since your reply. They do have the knowledge of Pumas and have the diagnostic equipment for upgrades. All their engineers have gone to LR College and their equipment is exactly the same as LR use. Their service reports have the same criteria as LR. They are not a LR franchise and he said there are no LR approved independents just specialists who have been LR trained and use same parts as etc He said that Ford, who who know owns LR, and the government recognise smaller non dealers as experts. They also said that they give a 12 month anti corrosion check and the service book will have their stamp on it. They said re warranty they do not do warranty work and these have to go back to the main LR dealer and that servicing does not effect warranty. I think I should go ahead, just thought I would run it past you. Thanks again and no more questions after this one, promise! |

Also ask about if you get it serviced by a indy...Is your corrosion/inspection warranty still covered...As LR tried to get out of a warranty cliam with me because LR say that a indy cannot do the corrosion/inspection NEVER TAKE LIFE SERIOUSLY. NOBODY GETS OUT ALIVE ANYWAY

I will check with the Indy re the corrosion/inspection warranty. Cannot believe LR and thought I'd speak to three official dealers in a 40 mile radius re 1st service charges for a '10 puma xs 2.4lt. Wait for it!! For 1st year service or 12k, service parts, inc vat, prices went from £544/£434 and £400. Unbelievable! So if going to a main dealer, cross check prices. I am going to the Indy, same inspection service sheet, specialist engineers, equipment and parts with VAT for £260.

Anthony, the first service is a diagnostic check, an oil change, and the anti corrosion check, that's it. I wouldnt worry who you take it to to be honest but to pay 480 quid for an oil change and a 5 minute diagnostic seems madness to me.

Nothing takes 5 minutes with IDS... You are right though, and I suspect numerous ones go out unchecked or even with a new oil filter up in. |

I did a first year service on a 60 plate defender 90 last week and found that it needed half litre gear oil in transfer box - the T box showed no sign of any oil leaks so have to assume it was low from dealer at PDI. We checked all levels and did the service by the book, checked all as described and changed engine oil, filter and washer bottle top up. It came to less than 1/2 of the £480 quoted above!!! including VAT
