Sad to report my beloved Defender 130 was stolen today from Witley Station car park in Surrey.
I doubt I will ever see it again but on the off chance…. Very distinctive spec, reg GM64FDU Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Some good news, I managed to find the car this morning via Apple AirTag activation. Called the police who have recovered for forensics, made a mess of the inside but no real structural damage!

More layers of security on it now. |

Good news. I have an AirTag in mine, somewhere tucked away and have removed the speaker, so good to know the tech works. Hopefully you’ll be back on the road soonish.

Because AirTags were being used by naughty/nasty people to track others, say by slipping an AirTag into a bag or coat pocket, Apple added a small speaker to later AirTags so that anyone ‘pinging’ the tag, tracking it as a ‘lost item’, it makes a sound. This is great if someone is tracking you and you don’t know - every time an iPhone come into range the airtag will make a noise and you’ll hear it and be alerted to the fact it’s on you. Not so stealthy. If you’re using it as a tracking device in a vehicle with the speaker still in place, when you set the airtag to let you know its location (I.e. ‘find my AirTag’), it’ll makes a noise alerting the thieving oik to the fact that there’s an airtag in the vehicle. F*ckface may take the time to locate it and throw it away. If you take the speaker out there is nothing to indicate the AirTag’s presence so hopefully it remains tucked away in the vehicle and you can track it Of course the noise may freak said scum of the earth out causing them to carefully park your vehicle up and run away. I guess it’s down to personal prefermace if you want to alert them to possible tracking…. Do a YouTube search for ‘remove AirTag speaker’…. HTH. H |

It turned into quite the day.
I haven’t been able to have a good look as it’s being taken for forensics. There were multiple air tags, they found one and had been searching. They had accessed the OBD and battery compartment. While I was there, a van came past and went off fairly quickly. Reg confirmed as the same as the vehicle which was with the Defender when they dropped it, plate known to police We only found this out because the person living opposite had a Tesla which recorded footage of them arriving and leaving |

Very good result
I see from the recovered picture that they had changed the number plate too. Edit: a quick Google suggests the LK54 plate is the Defender photographed for Prince Philip's funeral Click image to enlarge BORG - Bucks & Oxon 4x4 Response Group |

According top the police standard practice, if it has a fake plate or indeed no plate, ANPR cannot track it
I did comment that ANPR seems very good at getting you at 74 in a 70 but is useless for catching people stealing cars....... |
