MANTEC wheel carrier install craziness and question
Well I finally got a Mantec wheel carrier and went to install it today and quickly realized the old owner decided to use a gallon of silicon to basically weld it to the car...

There was no way I was going to get the mounting bracket off... I tried everything... heat gun, piano wire, floss... I was at a loss. Then my wife had a brilliant idea... what about just cutting the welds and removing the mounting posts and leaving the plate... Great idea.

Here we go...

Ok so now I have a question, how do i actually mount an aluminum wheel to a wheel carrier as the posts are much smaller than the lug holes in the wheel?

Is it safe to just use the old backing plate?

looks like you have a steel wheel carrier ? they have shorter studs.

do you have the part number off it?

dont use the plate as shown....

if possible, buy the right carrier or you can maybe use a wheel spacer but it will put a lot of strain on the back door and hinges.

Standard practice is to use KTD500100 behind the wheel. Then you can also have some adjustment.

The wheel nuts (for alloys) will fill the hole, same as when they are fitted to the wheel hub. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thank you for the replies. I did a sanity check and MANTEC only makes 2-wheel carriers as far as I can tell: half-door, and full-door.

The part number for the one I have here is 214-MASWC.

So folks that are mounting aluminum wheels must be using spacers. I will see if my dealer has the spacer nuts or I will order them thank you for the help.

Also just a thought, why would using the mounting plate not be suggested? From what I can tell the backing plate allows more contact on the wheel's backside. 1989 Defender 90

Mantec closed a few years back but they used to make quite a few carriers for alloy and steel wheels. yours does early and late models and should fit without the old plate.(steel and alloy corrosion)

add the spacers as shown plus nuts and it should be fine

Thanks! When you say “add the spacers plus nuts, is there something in addition to the spaces I need aside from the lug nuts? 1989 Defender 90

No. The spacers go behind the wheel and allow you to adjust its position, fore and aft. This is typically to make sure that the wheel doesn't foul the rear wiper. With the wheel in place, you'll then need standard alloy wheel nuts. As Dinnu mentioned above, alloy wheel nuts will fill the holes in the wheels in exactly the same way as when they're mounted on hubs. The studs are, of course, exactly the same diameter. Darren

Yep, I follow thank you! Will keep you posted, I basically spend all day removing and cleaning up the fallout from the stupid stock mount. Tomorrow I hope to get the new one on, and in the meantime I 3d printed some mounting spacers. 1989 Defender 90

Hallelullya. I will just say I have a lot of appreciation for you DIY'ers that have installed a Wheel carrier... It is no joke getting all the geometry right on these things. But, it's on and I can finally mount my spare!.
Thank you for all the help

It's great that you got there in the end. I know it looks a snug fit but was there no way of refitting your RH grab handle? Darren
