TD5 noise
Hi all,

I've just been out in the Landy and I've noticed it's making a bit of a weird noise... Rolling Eyes

Unfortunately a local specialist is unable to check it over until 2-3 weeks, so thought I'd post up on here on the off chance its obvious to someone. My main concern is hoping something is not imminently about to fail...

Seems to drive fine (I hadn't noticed until the window was down Embarassed ), albeit the noise rises with the revs (both stationary or on the move)

Here is a little sound clip of the noise, vehicle is in neutral and idling then I just tapped the throttle accordingly.

My camera was placed on the passenger side front wing looking into the engine bay and surprisingly seemed to pick up the sound very well.

Thank you!

Sounds like a dry bearing to me. Could be my cruddy tiny speaker mind...

Agree, sounds like a worn bearing. I would whip the aux belt off and give each of the idlers/tensioner rollers a spin by hand to feel if any seem rough.

Could be the fan bearing too which is a common issue. Should be an easy fix though if you can pinpoint which one it is.

Also just worth double checking your power steering fluid level as low level can make the pump make some odd noises albeit not like it sounds in the video from my experience.

As they say.

I would whip off the drive belt, and start engine. If no noise you know it’s something belt driven.

Thank you all, really appreciate it. On the face of it (and I have little mechanical ability), it sounds like it can hopefully be solved simply.

Assuming it is any one of the idlers/tensioner rollers, is it worth refreshing them all at the same time along with the belt?

I presume the garage will tell me to do that.

The PAS fluid I will double check but I did top that up sometime ago, that groan was different.

At the same time shall I still with Genuine LR parts for any of the suggested issues?

No. You really want to know which/what it is, otherwise it will get very expensive. It may just be belt tensioner, but could be alternator, or power steering pump.

Just my opinion based on my own experience - others will have their own - but if it is the tensioner pulley, I’d suggest you go for OEM/LR.

I’ve had at least two pattern pulleys that have failed. I could have just been unlucky…

Good luck finding and resolving the issue 👍

Good advice above, and I will also add, do it sooner rather than later as when X (whatever it is) fails it could cause other problems/damage.

Thank you all for the responses and really appreciate the guidance.

I will report back when resolved, hopefully won't be too long. But since my post I've stopped driving it and hopefully the next trip is only when it's being sorted!

I had the exact same sound coming from mine, turned out to be the belt idler pulley bearing. The bearing is a 63033. I got one from work cost less than a fiver. Compared to over £50 for the new idler assembly.

Thank you that is appreciated - well hopefully it's ok to make it up to the garage in a couple weeks time. A quick google seems the genuine JLR equivalent is on back order, so will wait to hear what they say.

Quick update on this, the workshop have looked at this and advised the idler pulleys are at fault / 'worked'. Service advisor did not state which specifically. Similarly advised the aux belt and tensioner could do with a replacement.

They are fitting ALLMAKES parts:

-ERR6493 IDLER-TIMING BELT
-ERR6658 IDLER - ANCILLARY
-ERR6951G TENSIONER-TIMING BELT
-PQS101490D DRIVE BELT - AUXILIARY - TD5

I did ask for JLR genuine items, however was shortly advised not available from them any longer. They have assured me these are high quality.

After checking with them, it appears the Aux Belt & Tensioner are All Makes OEM, whilst both Idler's are All Makes aftermarket as advised not otherwise available.
