It was about 6 weeks ago when I spoke to Alive and they told me that Demand make all their exhaust components, including the downpipe, which is of a different design as mentioned above.
I have the demand exhaust being fitted next week, but without the downpipe. I have the big centre silencer to keep the cabin noise down as I do lots of long distance driving. Next month the truck goes to Alive for a GTB450 upgrade and I might get them to fit the downpipe. I've not done it straight away as I want to assess cabin noise with the exhaust.. I've done so much to soundproof my truck it would be a bit daft to deliberately make it noisy again! Can anyone comment on increased noise through the Alive decat downpipe? Good luck with the fitting and do let me know what it does for cab noise.
Are you going for the GTB450? I am very excided about getting mine done TD5 hardtop to Puma inspired Poptop - my build thread 2002 110 TD5 Hardtop ¦ Full Puma interior ¦ Carpathian grey / Santorini black ¦ X-Vision-X poptop |

Yes, will do.
I was going to get the GTB450 as well but now decided to just get a hybrid from Empire tuning instead which works out quite a bit cheaper as they include the remap in the package and as far as I can see from dyno graphs is not that far behind the GTB450 and very similar to the Alive hybrid. They are closer to me, so I can get to a dyno session with them easier. I think the VNT will be better still mostly in the lower end of the rpm range but I am not really looking for a fast car anyway in my defender. My goal was just to do this to support the Disco TC gear ratio and V8 5th gear that I will be putting in. So really, being able to keep up with traffic and lower RPM at cruising speed. This was a cost save decision after deciding to upgrade my soft top conversion order with a full roll cage! I thought I should probably prioritise safety! |

Pretty much the same here, I have the Disco transfer ratios and want the extra oomph at low revs, particularly when hauling the truck up steep switchbacks in the mountains to minimise the downshifting TD5 hardtop to Puma inspired Poptop - my build thread

Cool, I went down a similar train of before as well, trying to get noise down as much as possible so it's more suitable for camping trips with the family but lately just decided since most weekend drives with the Defender have actually been quite local, a softtop and a little bit more noise but nicer noise would be ok. Plus my 3 year old actually loves how loud it is...!
Anyway, Fedex man just gave me this: Click image to enlarge Quite excited to get this fitted and hear what the noise it going to be like. |

Nice!
Any chance you can measure noise with a sound meter on your phone before and after, say at 2000 rpm stationary? Would be great to have an actual measurement to compare.. Sure I will give try measure a before after.
Probably won't be until mid next week when I get time to fit but will update on here. |

The Cat is what makes the biggest sound difference. It takes out massive amounts of sound.

Ive got a demand full exhaust with a small centre silencer and no cat (from factoty). In terms of noise its ok. Ive youre just driving about at low rpms it isnt much off stock. If you start hooning and put your foot down it makes some serious noise. I was worried about droning on long journeys as i drive across europe a couple of times per year, but between 60 and 70 its super quiet, not sure if this is engineered in or just coincidence. When you drop the speed below 60 between 50-60 its a bit droney. I have just had my map done by empire and i couldnt believe the sound difference just the map makes. Ive had a dual map done so have one a bit tuned down and a slower throttle response and one as more of a power map, and even the sound difference between the two maps is astonishing. I would definitely recommend a twin map especially if you want something a bit more subtle for long journeys.

Good to know this on the mapping, I didn't realise it would make a difference. Will definitely enquire about this when I get the turbo and map done.
Did you get the hybrid turbo as well? |

No I didn’t go with a hybrid, I’ve just got a big intercooler, exhaust and made a bigger intake. I intend to drive around on the lower power setting most of the time and occasionally flip over for a blast every now and again. I know people who have got mapped trucks with a load of miles on but I still don’t want to compromise engine reliability too much, especially when abroad, hence why I went for the dual map.
The way I look at the bigger turbos is that if I wanted a fast car I’d get a faster car not a defender. Plenty of tasty straight 6 BMW’s you can get for defender money. My defender now with the map is wayyy faster than I thought it would be anyway. My main issue with it stock was that on big motorway hills (especially the huge ones in France) it would struggle to maintain 70 or towing even struggle to maintain 60, I’d be in 4th revving the nuts off just to keep up with traffic. |

I completely understand what you mean, previously I was thinking along those lines as well but due to a change in our usage pattern(as well as watching too many American restomod YouTube videos...), I am now just after something a bit more interesting and fun. Hence the soft top as well.
Funny you mentioned BMW I-6s because my other car is a M340i |

So I managed to install the pipe and measured the before and after with a phone app. Below are the results, which is a bit weird as it's louder at idle and low rpm, gets quieter around cruising rpm and then louder again at above 2500rpm. Not sure how much to read into it as it's just an app and not a proper meter but it does seem to feel that way as far as how I felt. Also, as mentioned by the others I did get a very noticeable drone at lower rpm which seems to go away At cruising rpm.
Btw how tight am I supposed to torque the U clamp bolts? Click image to enlarge |
