Sadly long overdue IMO, the vehicles of today have nothing to do with the standards, values, intent, and philosophy of the Land-Rover brand.
It is however strange and irrational from a business perspective but entirely consistent with the recent management of JLR. |

I think it makes sense, although I know others will disagree.
Relaunch Jaguar as an EV brand at the cutting edge of technology to compete with BMW, Lexus, Audi and Mercedes etc. - we've all seen the rout they are going. Break up LR into its sub brands to align with how today's market identifies with the brand: - Posh / business RR RRS Velar Evoque (I'd lose this one) Family Discovery Discovery Sport Adventure types / family / farmers, construction etc. Defender 90,110, 130 +HT versions The days of go anywhere farmer / military vehicles have long gone. IF LR want to keep up then it would have produced a pickup. I've never bought a LR but I have bought 3 Discoveries, a Discovery Sport and a new Defender but I have bitched and moaned about LR's poor customer service. Most people never use the off-road capability and the reality is a big SUV or people carrier will do what 90% of people need it to do. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy. |

Does anyone actually say land rover anymore? Surely that stopped when the disco was introduced and the “land rover ’ became a defender. I’ve always found it jarring when you see an ad on auto trader for a Land Rover Range Rover, nah it’s a Range Rover🤷♂️
Is it not already just a Defender or Discovery? Range Rover, RR Sport, RR Velar, RR Evoke, nobody uses the Land Rover bit do they? |

The ‘sold out’/12mth waiting list Ineos Grenadier would say otherwise. Besides, I’ve never thought of the Defender as a supreme off road vehicle, it hasn’t been the best for years, and would be beaten hands down by the Disco and even Range Rover (with their Terrain Response systems) if they were properly shod in off road tyres. The beauty of the Defender was its adaptability and was something beloved by many owners, (be they private or commercial), right up to when production stopped in 2016. They never had trouble selling them, and wouldn’t have had they made a Grenadier quality replacement. ‘Quality’ from LR This ability to change or modify a vehicle, whether an electric company using it for a cherry picker or a private owner using it to make their dream overlander, was lost with the new SUV Defender. Bizarre decision. Replacing a car that was almost unique, was popular, was selling well and only needed improving, to be replaced by ‘yet another’ SUV to be added to the JLR model range that already had eight SUVs in its stable. So a few new sales, (have they exceeded the sales lost by those who wanted the classic Defender?), and then the remainder of sales poached from the Disco and RRS. Unbelievable business decision and evidence of the systemic rot within LR, led by Gerry and his obsessive desire to make everything worthy of use only by people with Buffon hair, wearing a claret velour jacket and cravat. LR lost out to the pick-up market yonks ago. The pick-up gave farmers and others enough 4x4 capability to do the job in a comfortable cabin, with a good load area and reliability.
It was also a platform that developed a good aftermarket supplier base that enabled them to change and adapt the vehicles to do what they wanted it to do. I'm pleased Ineos has a 12 month waiting list. I think its a great car but the key is maintaining the sales. We are in a changing world and the large SUV 4x4 probably has a finite life on it. JLR needs to this out its offering and diversify in order to compete. This new structure is the start of that. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy. |
