Dash speaker upgrade - Puma dash
UPDATED
Hi all, just looking at upgrading my front speakers in my Puma.

I believe the standard ones are 4"? but could be 4.something depending on how you measure them (the ones under the dash by your knees).

Can anyone share their upgrades? Can you squeeze in 5" with spacers?

Thanks in advance.

Standard speakers are 4"

Focal and Audison are some of the ones that a lot of people fit. Have a search, there's plenty of threads on here with details and pictures.

FWIW, I did some measuring up and (with some trimming of the dash) I think there would be enough to fit a 5.25" speaker in there, possibly without a spacer, but it will all depend on the size of the magnet. The restriction is some of the heater/vent pipes behind the dash on the passenger side (on a RHD car).

I was hunting around for a suitable good speaker with a small (neo) magnet/motor assembly, but fitted some better 4" speakers in the meantime. I'm happy enough with the sound I've achieved, so the hunt for the bigger speakers has dropped down my priority list somewhat.

Thanks JPBoost
I did have a 'man look' as my wife calls it and found a thread with 66 pages but most photos were missing so gave up. Then found some other threads which were really helpful.

I must admit, I think I'm edging towards the Focal 4" or 5.25" components.

I upgraded mine over lock down

a selection of Rockford fosgate and Focal, I have since added a Hertz amp also.

Here is what I did...

I put the audison kit up front in mine, and a set of JL audio 5.25" co-axials in the rear. I'm also running a separate sub and amp to fill in the low end.

I'm reasonably pleased with how it sounds given the relatively low effort it's taken to this point.

if you're looking at the 5.25's then it'll all be about the magnet/motor size and shape. I had a few sets of 5.25 components in the garage from previous installations (I used to do quite a lot of car audio a few years back), but they were all much too beefy for the space available. Some of the Neo magnet/motor stacks can be quite compact, so this would be your best chance of getting a 5.25 in the stock locations. You'll need to cut the dash though, even if you can find a set with a small enough magnet.

Thanks Stacey007, looks good. Know what you mean by cutting the dash, and was hesitant, but a previous owner has fitted a double din and therefore cut a hole for the switch relocation.

I fitted Focal ES100K components driven by an Alpine head unit.

They were... ok. A definite improvement over standard but still lacked depth or volume. I was a bit underwhelmed given the cost of them

I later added in the Focal ibus 2.1 sub which completely transformed things.

This system uses the sub amp to drive both the components and the sub and it really give things a boost. Even with the sub turned off the components are really alive compared to when they were driven by the head unit. > 110 XS Double Cab

Thanks for all of your comments and suggestions - much appreciated.
I've gone for 6.5 components in the rear, 5.25 components in the front, 4 channel amp under the seat until I make a new Cubby box to house it all in.
Rear: modified the rear plastic speaker grills, mounted the tweeters in the panel above the door and hid the crossover behind the speaker panel using Blue Peter's favourite - 'double sided sticky tape'!
Front: tweeters were direct replacement, mid range under the dash with a spacer and again hid the crossover behind the dash. As jpboost said, the magnet size and position is key, so I did have to use the hot air paint stripper to manipulate the heater tube on the passenger side. I really hope the hair on my hand grows back 🤣.

I'll add some photos later so it may help others or give them inspiration for their own install.

which components did you go for?

Appreciate that not everyone will want to trim the dash or warm/reshape heater ducting, but for those that might, knowing suitable brands/models will be helpful
